Hello again!

This project is going to be run parallel to Argentum, it's a tiny ITX, air cooled build that aims to make the most of what the form factor can offer.

So a while back AMD approached me and asked if I'd like to do a build for them as part of the launch for their upcoming R9 Nano card.  Given how Argentum is shaping up to be a beastly, giant of a rig, I couldn't help but feel drawn to the idea of building something at the opposite end of the spectrum at the same time.  The brief was simple, make it small and make it powerful.  I'd like to offer a big thank you to AMD who are fully financing this project along with allowing the opportunity to begin with!

Specs:

So in lieu of the brief, I chose the following components:

CPU: Intel i7 6700k
Motherboard: EVGA Z170 Stinger
RAM: 16GB Kingston Fury Black 2400MHz
Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i
Storage: 2TB Samsung 850 Evo
GPU: AMD R9 Nano
PSU: Silverstone 450W Strider Gold

Now some of you may be thinking "why no M.2" or "How come not that X99 Asrock board".  Well those would be sensible points to make.  A HyperX 480GB Predator drive is on the way, but I made a mistake.  It turns out the Stinger has a near useless Key E M.2 port, which means no Predator unfortunately.  So that's being shelved for the next build (spoilers...) instead.  As for X99, well for a start I think that board is hideous, but even if it looked good I'd have an issue.  Something doesn't quite seem right about using a CPU with near as dammit the same TDP as the dedicated GPU.  One of the key points about the Nano is its low power usage, which would be completely nullified by some mahoosive 150W+ CPU.  There's also the matter of cooling the things.  X99 CPUs need hefty cooling, meaning I'd need a bigger cooler, which would have cut my options down significantly.

Renders:

And as usual, here's a batch of renders of what the build should look like.  These are sans components as they haven't arrived yet.  The files are being sent off to the printers and Parvum Systems on Monday, fingers crossed we can get things done during the week on that end.

Off topic, does parvum accept special one-off requests for cases? I'm thinking to make a "modernized" AW Predator chassis.

I will, however, happily share the 3D model with the community in case somebody wants to print their own. Word of caution, the best printing quote I was given was £1750 to have this done so unless you have a large bed printer yourself, it's not feasible for most, especially given the very restrictive compatible components list.

Yup Parvum do indeed take custom orders, although you'd get a better idea of what they can and can't do by asking them directly. Great bunch of guys though, very talented to boot.

woah £1750 eek.gif
id like to look at the model if you wouldnt mind?
i could print it in pieces & then glue it together. then cast a silicone mould & pour it in poly resin wink.gif
you could do all that yourself tbh for less than £1750 including buying a 3d printer also.

its a really cool design though thumb.gif

Maximum dimensions are275x170x287mm (LxWxH). It certainly could be machined entirely from aluminium, but you'd need a very serious machine and a lot of time to do it thanks to all the curves. An easier method to get a metal one would be to have it 3D printed and then cast in aluminium. If done properly that could look amazing, especially if polished up.

Aye probably, but it would be a lot of work for not much gain really. Standard 3D printers (certainly at that budget range) are almost all rubbish for the most part so I wouldn't be interested. Done way too many crap prints with them so I've just given up and gone industrial. I'll post up a copy of the file tomorrow when I have access to it again smile.gif

I know what you mean about cheap 3d printers & the quality rolleyes.gif im not that impressed with mine. but it does the job. 90% of the time anyway wink.gif
them stratasys printers where they use PVA for support material & do the vapour smoothing etc. they dont miss a beat from what ive seen. i wish i could afford one lol sad-smiley-002.gif

its just a suggestion really for doing it cheaper. & for that kind of money i would just print it myself in pieces, slap on some of this & sand it smooth & then cast it.

Processed By eBay with ImageMagick, z1.1.0. ||B2

if you make an rtv silicone mould of it? you could cast as many as you want with resin. you could even make wax castings & cast it in aluminium like you said. smile.gif

id be interested in the file if you can arrange it? i love the designs you come up with & i might actually attempt it as long as your ok with that? thumb.gif
