One or both of my GTX 660s are going. Is it really time to upgrade?

I was just playing CS:GO and noticed my game froze, but I was able to minimize and right click the icon on my tray and close it out.

What I would like to ask for advice on is: Is it time to upgrade?

I only play AION and just started playing FPS games again (BF3/CS:GO).

My monitor is a ASUS 144Hz monitor (the one that really hurts my eyes with that pulsing refresh it has.... is it called PoM?)

Anyway,

I need help stress testing my GPU and figuring out which one is the stinky one.

I suppose the most simple way (and I figured I am answering my own question) is just to game with each one.

If I were to upgrade, I would only want one GPU as opposed to two. I would like to be in the $200-300 range (What a gap, I know, but I'd like to hear my options as I don't really plan on upgrading my resolution until a game comes out that really changes my mind: At that point I would buy a new monitor and power house GPU - for now I just want a bang for buck one)

It's not that unusual, in fact it's fairly common with multi card setups. And it doesn't necessarily mean either of your GPUs is bad... It was probably a driver hiccup.

But if you want to upgrade, $300 will get you a 290 or one of the cheaper GTX 970s. Then there's a big jump down to the ~$200 range, where there's the GTX 960, R9 285/380, or an older 280X/7970.

This has been happening rarely over the past two years. I've always noticed one of my 660s were acting funky when I use to play BF3 and would see artifacts.

I suppose AION, the cry engine MMO I play, doesn't support SLI.. so maybe I have to figure out which one it is.

Today, I hopped in AION *with SLI* and I can barely play the game because it's so choppy. My frames seem halfed at 60 FPS, but something is definitely up.

It could be that I have 4GB of memory instead of 8GB, but I have to see how much memory my OS, background APPs, and game are taking up in order to find out if this could be an issue as well.

EDIT: I literally restarted my computer, because I remember it was acting up yesterday and I never restarted it (As in Counter-strike: GO would freeze, but I can still minimize and close the game). So now that it is restarted I have 60FPS in my game as opposed to 30FPS.. Super wierd, is this another indication only one of my cards is at work, because I thought AION did not support SLI? (Or maybe the card that is being used for the game, is not performing 100% at all times?)?

I don't know the ambient temperature of my room, but there is a constant fan on my GPU and my room doesn't seem to be that hot. My mobo was reading around 55*C while gaming.

Depends. Restarting could've fixed a hardware hiccup, but it could also clear out some memory for the game or de-derp the drivers.

You should watch GPU usage in-game with something like MSI afterburner. Not every title officially supports SLI, but many will attempt to use it if they run on the same engine as an officially supported game (like Cryengine).

Also, you should work on getting 8GB of memory thumb.gif

the reason you got 60 fps after restarting your computer is because you had a driver crash and after driver crashes it keeps the gpus at 2d clocks until you restart.

your gpus arent bad at all, if you want to upgrade it wont be justified by bad graphics cards. you should turn up the fan speed to 100% when playing games. auto is bad

Understood, I will turn on my 48" on my desk and dual monitor (hurts my eyes, but it will help myself understand how much of GPU is being used)

I have 8GB of memory, but one of my sticks might be faulty. So I was going to leave that for the memory section, but I really don't have a thread up. I should probably run MEMTEST, but I should do a quick tutorial because I don't know how to use it.

I rather not buy new GPU(s) and keep using my 660s 'til they go bad.

Thank you for chiming in, it's hard realizing what's going on with my PC.

Furthermore, you are absolutely right my fan speed was set on AUTO instead of 100%.

Let's see if this changes anything, and I will report back at night.

100% guranteed thats the problem is too slow fan speed. or maybe slight degradation so bump up core voltage for both cards just a little bit like from example 900mv to 1000mv

So far the computer has been doing well, I thank you for helping me out.

I still might need a better GPU to help me record while playing but that would cost money and revamping of my build.

I salute you with rep.
