I run 1.275 for 2800 and it is really not stressing the RAM at all and they are staying around 20c. I am sure if I set it to 1.35 I could get 3000 out of them.

Check with G.Skill about that. 1.2 to 1.35 is a big jump for RAM.

Check with the OCN RAM Addict Club & Gallery thread. I bet they would tell you it's not that big of a deal. Mine @ 2800 is supposed to be 1.25v, the 1.2 is if you run it @ 2133. I haven't tried yet but even around 1.3v might get me to 3000. This RAM is made to overclock but I would say I don't recommend running 24/7 overclocked RAM because it could and probably will shorten the life of it. I think an XMP is fine though, if you can't run it at the rated XMP then it's not worth the extra money.

After updating my BIOS (to F6a) the XMP problem has gone away. Everything is stable and Memtest is reporting no errors after running overnight. I imagine it's just a matter of time for a lot of z170 board owners for the BIOS to be tightened up. smile.gif

Thanks for all the help and suggestions on here. This is a great forum! smile.gif

How's fan control on the Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7 board? I have 8 fans and 2 PWM hubs that I like running at 650RPM. I had to order a PCI-E Wireless adapter for the board since it didn't have one which makes the total I spent for the board $309

After reading a few reviews I am regretting not just purchasing the Z170 Asus Deluxe.

Anyone else done this? or going to do this?

I'm particularly interested in two Samsung 950 pros in RAID 0 vs a single 1TB intel 750

I got a Samsung 950 Pro 512MB this week and installed it in my UD5 with an Addonics M.2 PCIe x4 adapter. Happy to report that it "just works" and doesn't seem to introduce any significant latency. I'm not a reviewer, so I'm not going to do comparative benchmarks or temperature studies, but this configuration is a lot easier to access and seems like it will provide better airflow. Since the last PCIe slot is either/or with the lower M.2 slot and doesn't interfere with SATA for the most part, there doesn't seem to be any compromise with the arrangement other than the need to buy an adapter.

I'm not booting off the drive yet (waiting for the next Win 10 build to do a clean install), but other things I've put on it have been appreciably faster, even compared to my old SATA SSD. IntelliJ IDEA launches in less than 10 seconds. Assassin's Creed Unity fast travels to the other side of the city in under 5 seconds. Much of the time I'm not going to notice how ridiculously fast this thing is, but for the stuff that's really I/O dependent there is a difference.

There was some discussion of that earlier. My guess is that it's a SoC feature.

In the BIOS? No direct fan curve control. You get to set a linear curve based on some PWM factor. Also, though there's multiple 4 pin headers, only the CPU header is actually PWM. The rest are voltage controlled, but still based on that same PWM factor.

There's software control, but that doesn't seem to work for most people.

Gigabyte is a bit behind when it comes to fan control.

Another question, anyone have two Thunderbolt 3 systems? I'm wondering if that 10Gb ethernet thing is working in Windows yet. I need more reasons to justify building another rig lol

The SIV in the App Center works great for me on the Gaming 7. You have the option to just set 1 of 4 pre-set curves or set your own curve (temp controlled) for all 4 headers. To me the lack of fan headers is more of a drawback than the control of the ones it does have.

I find it extremely funny, the H170 Gaming 3 board doesn't allow XMP, but they have a BIOS revision that improved XMP compatibility with the board.
What gives?
