My new rig.

I've been planning this thing for ages and I've changed my mind about a dozen times now, but I think I finally have it nailed down. I just got a new credit card to buy my remaining parts with and I'll order them as soon as it arrives. Here's what's going to be in it.

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv
Motherboard: MSI A88XM Gaming
RAM: 32gb Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 2133 (already have)
GPU: MSI R9 390X
CPU: A10-7870K
PSU: Corsair AX760i (already have)
HDD: Western Digital black series 3tb. (already have)
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo. 500gb or 1tb. I haven't decided yet.
Cooling: Thermaltake Riing 120 and 140 fans. NZXT Grid fan hub. (already have)

I'm going to shorten up the cables a bit since it's a M-ATX. I'll sleeve them too. I'm also going to put in some cold cathode lights or LED strips to give a better view through that tinted window. Eventually I want to get a second GPU and water cool everything. Maybe even paint the case. That's for later though. Right now I just want this thing to be finished. I'll post pictures of my progress as I build it. I should be ordering stuff in a couple of days.

Edit: And Tuniq TX-4 thermal paste if anyone cares. I have a tube of it collecting dust in my closet that I want to finish off.

Any particular reason you're going with the 7870k instead of an Athlon?

Not really. I filtered my Newegg search by my socket type and stuck the fastest one in my wish list. I'm not really up to date on AMD processors these days. Before this I had been planning to get an i7-4790k. 4 core 4ghz stock vs 4 core 3.9ghz stock. I figured it was close enough.

Man, I hate to be the guy to poop in your build log, but there's a giant difference in performance there. I'm not going to dissuade you from what you want to do, but I think it would behoove you to research some different hardware.

Alright. I'll look into it. Same socket?

Edit: The best one on Newegg is the X4 860K, a quad core at 3.7ghz. Are they really good overclockers or something?

Edit 2: Tiger Direct is showing the same thing. The X4 860k and a couple that are 2.05ghz and 1.6ghz. Am I missing something?

The difference is that the 7870k has an integrated graphics unit that would be completely superseded by your video card; the 860k is the same chip with the graphics unit deactivated which saves you money.

If you'd like to discuss some changes to your build, rather than wrecking your build thread, you could make a new one in the AMD-General forum and get a lot more views, replies, and information.

For the FM2+ socket, probably the best buy is the 860k. They overclock very well and don't suffer from the added cost of an iGPU you wont be using anyways.

The other 2 speeds you mentioned look like the AM1 socket. They are great for htpc units, not so much for gaming.

You'll regret the FM2+ CPUs with that 390X.

This just shows that you need to research more. The i7 could probably run at 2Ghz and get similar performance in games. If you have the money for Intel, go with them. Comparing clock speeds like that doesn't work unless it's the same architecture.
