There's no real reason to get the MG279Q over the XL2730Z; the MG279Q only has a 30-90 Hz FreeSync range and changing it to 57-144 is an annoying process apparently. It lacks blur reduction too and costs more, all for better viewing angles.

So wait and see if a new AOC monitor comes out, otherwise I vote for the XL2730Z.

This. Seriously the one and only gripe I have with the 2730Z is the use of a really grainy matte coating. The viewing angles aren't as good but at least it will not suffer from any sort of IPS glow. As someone who owns an XB270HU with an AHVA panel and the 2730Z I can say that for a TN panel, it really gives the 144hz AHVA panels a run for it's money. I do not own a DSLR or some high end camera so it's really hard for me to convey how close the Benq comes to the Acer but meh I'll try anyway.

And here's the 2730Z with it's "far far worst" colors and viewing angles rolleyes.gif

Will probably order the Benq one of these days.

Kinda off topic : Does anyone know why there are so few 1440p/+144hz monitors in general. From what I've found on the internet , there are just 12 1440p/+144hz on the market (while 3 or 4 will get released in the coming weeks or months).

-Dell S2716DG : TN, G-sync
-Asus ROG Swift PG278Q : TN G-sync
-Acer Predator XB271HU: TN G-sync

-Acer XB270HU: IPS, G-sync
-Asus ROG Swift PG279Q IPS G-sync
-Acer Predator XB271HU: IPS G-sync

-BenQ XL2730Z : TN Freesync
-Acer XG270HU: TN Freesync
-Asus MG278Q : TN Freesync

-Asus MG279Q : IPS Freesync
-Eizo Foris FS2735 : IPS Freesync
-Acer XF270HU: IPS, Freesync

You can choose between 6 Freesync and 6 G-sync monitor and those are divided in 3 TN and 3 IPS panels. There are alot of Brands that produce monitors (LG , Samsung, Viewsonic etc...) ,yet there are just 12 Monitors that suppot Freesync and G-sync in total.

This is a fairly small market segment. Go tell someone you know who isn't a gamer that you're about to spend $500 on a monitor. They'll give you strange looks. And this segment goes up to over $1000. They are gaming monitors and the gaming brands have them (ASUS, Acer, BenQ). We're lucky non-gamer brands have stepped in like Dell, ViewSonic, and Eizo.

Also these monitors, especially the IPS ones, might not be all that easy to make, hence the issues that plague them.

Only AUO actually made 1440p 144Hz panels. Samsung and LG previously did not make any such panels but they will start soon and they probably didn't want to use AUO panels in their own products.

So I just got this monitor yesterday and had some questions.

Portal doesn't seem to work with freesync? I get tearing even though I have the fps limited to 144 via crimson. Turning on vsync while the monitor reports that the refresh rate is 144 and freesync is on drops the fps to 60, any reason for this?

Crysis 2 seemed to work with no tearing when my fps was around 100-130 (vsync off as again turning it on drops the fps to 60).

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling crimson, factory resetting the monitor but I am not sure if everything is working as it should.

The only time I can tell 144hz its working is when its on the desktop because of how smooth the mouse motion is.

I will download the windmill demo after work today and give that a shot.

If enabling Vsync caps your FPS to 60 that means you have the game set to 60Hz not 144Hz regardless of what refresh rate you have set on the desktop, the game refresh rate is independent and must be changed individually in each game.

It's usually in the same option as resolution, with several refresh rate numbers with the same resolution.

1-) 2560x1440@59Hz
2-) 2560x1440@60Hz
3-) 2560x1440@75Hz
4-) You get the drill....

Sometimes the refresh rate setting is not embedded to the resolution setting and it's a standalone setting inside the game.

Also do remember to calibrate the monitor with the standard preset, the out of the box preset is disgusting at best.

God damn, I will have to look for that. I only tested portal 2 and crysis 2 last night and I dont recall seeing a refresh rate option BUT I wasn't looking for it either. I will check tonight, I at least know with portal it can be changed with the command line in game.

Thanks

AMD doesn't have an equivalent to "Prefer Highest Refresh Rate" in its driver settings?

Not that I can see, in crimson there's always off, off unless app specifies, on unless app specifies, and always on.

One thing I thought was strange that I was unable to create the custom resolution of 2560x1440 @ 144hz, it said it wasn't supported on my monitor yet if I check the monitor menu it says its running at 144hz. Another thing was the display pilot software reports the monitor at 60hz when the monitor menu reports 144. I am more inclined to believe the actual monitor then the software but the conflicting information is probably what is causing some doubt.

God damn, I will have to look for that. I only tested portal 2 and crysis 2 last night and I dont recall seeing a refresh rate option BUT I wasn't looking for it either. I will check tonight, I at least know with portal it can be changed with the command line in game.

Thanks

I believe Crysis 2 requires a .ini edit to support 144hz from what I recall otherwise it sits at 60hz regardless of desktop refresh. I do not own Portal 2 (I know....I know....heresy wink.gif ) so I cannot comment on that but it is probably the case as well. If you have BF4 or any Squeenix modern title they all have 144hz support in game menu and the Squeenix do in the launcher. Test with BF4 or any modern BF title if you have it imo. thumb.gif
