MSI GTX 980 Ti Lightning Owners Club - Page 22

One of the tricks that I used to get that 1493 mhz was the settings in bios, to trick the card into boosting itself to around 1500, then to stable I minus a few points off the core clock. I had to also use a core voltage of around 1181 mV, set memory voltage to -6, and auxillary voltage to -100, put the memory clock to +307. I found that the increased memory clock actually does help stable the OC, but only if it's paired with the appropriate memory voltage. I found that the auxillary voltage for me needed to be -100, else artifacts start coming into play. I tried higher and lower than a core voltage of 1181 mV, but all results came to artifacts and eventual crashing. Sweet spot was a core voltage of 1181 mV.

Update:
I am testing 1503 mhz. I have it almost stable, with a couple tiny artifacts. Urgh. I found out what is the limiting factor on my card, and it's the stupid memory. Some kind of fault on it that is holding it back.

Btw does msi Lightning 980ti ,does the fan only moves after a certain temp ? like 60C ?
like the asus strix 780, where the fans off but once it hits a certain temp it starts moving ? or does it permanently spin even at low temp

Mine haven't spent much time with the air coolers on, but I don't recall seeing them idle at desktop.

because zotac amp extreme 980ti , middle is intake and the 2 side fans are exhaust, wondering if its the same ?

Like all aftermarket coolers, the fans are intake and blow onto the heat sink.

Way too much weight is being put on the ASIC score of cards and I blame the internet for that. Unless you are a pro overclocker with the knowledge and LN2 to use, it isn't going to make a huge difference on these cards.

If it crashes it is because the overclock is unstable poke.gif

Perhaps it would help you if you read a few basic overclocking guides before you start throwing sliders around thumb.gif

The only Lightning cards I have owned that stopped fans were the 290x Lightnings. I believe that has more to do with AMD power saving features though, which makes the card "sleep" when not in use, not MSi's.

How do you get it now, I know the old requirements, has it changed, also what is the difference between normal and extreme (if you can tell me)

Thanks

I am involved in a Ln2 show at a technology trade show here on the 7-8th November, My part is showing the MSI z170 xpower and the GTX980Ti Lightning under ln2, for this an MSI rep from HQ is bringing me the OC Panel to borrow... Wish i could keep it but oh well, it will get plenty of use in the days after the show smile.gif

The best they can do for me for keepers is ABX but like gunners says it will be under NDA... thumb.gif

Will post pics and results in the week following the show

oww so close but nice smile.gif

ABX is designed for subzero overclocking in mind since it alows the user to set much higher core voltages and i think higher power limits too + vmem and pll.. It is not something that would be of any use to the average user thus why it is not available for DL just anywhere like AB so for air and even water they have 4.2.0 for triple overvoltage but limited the VDDC to 1.3V. MSI doesnt want ABX just given to anybody as they dont want people on air trying to throw 1.5+V on the core.

If you dont plan on using ln2 on your GPU, dont even bother trying to get ABX as it wont help at all.
