I may reply, but its during a break, lol. I have not touched my gaming rig in a month or so aside from moving it. LOL! Burned out on BIOS mods.

Still waiting in queue for my 1080 SC tongue.gif The thread will be revived once it arrives biggrin.gif

I am new to custom firmware for GPUs and just have some questions. For reference, I have the EVGA Geforce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0

1) I have already flashed to the latest non-test ROM for my card, there is definitely a performance increase, but I want to know what has changed vs stock firmware? What I have noticed is that the memory clock is a lot higher than I remember and it has its own fan curve from what I can tell (Could be wrong).

2) How close does this bring the card to GTX 980 performance? I don't expect miracles of course, but I am curious.

3) I never noticed this in GPU-Z before flashing to the customer firmware, but during my benchmark PerfCap is switching between pwr and util. Is this an issue? Noticed this during a Unigine Heaven and Firestrike benchmark. Haven't done any actual gaming with the new firmware yet, I have run the GTA V benchmark though, and the overall FPS is indeed higher.

4) Is it recommended that the GPU driver be reinstalled after upgrading to the custom firmware? Prior experience with upgrading firmware, this was stock firmware mind you, it was recommended that the driver be reinstalled.

The custom firmware was definitely worth switching over to, while the minimum FPS in the benchmarks I did didn't really change all that much, both the average and max FPS increased by a noticeable amount at the same settings. I need to do more testing, but my FPS seems more stable as well and that is definitely a benefit.

I will have to post my actual scores when I get home, my PC is pretty stable, and I keep my OS as optimized as possible for general use and gaming. I need to tackle overclocking my i7-6700k at some point, but need to find the time.

Edit: Benchmark Results

Firestrike (Not Extreme or Ultra): Turned on AF x16 and MSAA 2x (Demo off)

Before: Graphics - 10897 (52.34&43.28 fps), Physics - 12692 (40.29 fps), and Combined - 4335 (20.17 fps).

After: Graphics - 11467 (54.84&45.70 fps), Physics - 12 212 (38.77 fps), and Combined - 4589 (21.34 fps).

Unigine Heaven 4.0: Quality - Ultra, Tessellation - Extreme, AA - 2x, FS in 1080p, Stereo 3D and Multi Monitor are disabled

Before: FPS - 73.5, Score - 1851, Min FPS - 29.3, Max FPS - 158.3

After: FPS - 76.4, Score - 1925, Min FPS - 29.5, Max FPS - 171.8

GTA V: Average FPS went up between 5-15 fps, depending on the scene, and FPS was more stable.

1. Power limit increased, mem clock to 4GHz, core clock to 1.5GHz, max voltage to 1.275v
2. Pretty close, I've taken my old SSC to 1658Mhz and 1700Mhz

3. It's a known issue, not enough phases to maintain consistent power output.
The reason why EVGA release the SSC 2.0+:

4. Not unless the driver's corrupt due to FW install

This thread will be temporarily suspended until I receive my 1080 ACX 3.0 SC. No new development! Thanks to everyone for supporting this thread!

1) Thanks, I just wanted to know what to expect from the custom rom. Speaking of the power limit: I see you recommending to a user earlier on in the thread to "max out the slider so you don't encounter any throttle due to power.", is that still recommended or relevant? My slider goes up to 124

2) I'm glad actually, as I plan on keeping this card for awhile, so my goal is to maximize my gaming performance as much as possible.

3) I imagine that this really won't cause any issues, per se, but just that the card might throttle or something right?

4) Thank you for clearing that up for me, I just like avoiding driver re-installs when I can, so that I can avoid reapplying all my customizations for all my games XD

No problem! I would max out the power and voltage sliders, unlink the power and max out the temp slider to 91C too(will never see that temp with insane fan curve biggrin.gif ) and set priority to temp. Also it should not throttle as much with all the sliders maxed out.

Thanks again for all the help and for making my first foray into overclocking of any kind uncomplicated.

I adjusted my settings as you recommended and these were my results (Compare them to my results above):

Fire Strike
Graphics - 11834 (57.56 & 46.52 fps), Physics - 12501 (39.69 fps), and Combined - 4713 (21.92 fps).

Unigine Heaven 4.0 (Maxed Settings except for AA (Which is 2x), 1920x1080, Multi-Monitor and Stereo 3D disabled).

FPS - 80.2, Score - 2020, Min FPS - 23.8, Max FPS - 176.6

GTAV Benchmark: Average FPS went up again, but wasn't as noticeable as the first time.

The stock firmware scored higher on the Physics test for Fire Strikethan both the Physics test post-custom firmware and post recommended tweaks, not sure why that would be, as I used the same settings with all tests. An almost 1000 point increase in my Fire Strike benchmark vs stock performance is pretty good IMO, a definite improvement over the stock firmware, and no PerfCap issues this time. Now to test things with some actual gameplay.

Did get some brief "red flashes" during the Fire Strike benchmark, but noticed nothing out of the ordinary in the other benchmarks.

yeah, firestrike is weird, lol. as long as those red flashes don't appear during gaming, you're ok.

Hi everyone, I just recently got a used 970, but I got the Best Buy SSC version without realizing it was a special (gimped) pcb. Anyways I got a good deal on it, so I'm not too worried.

I'm getting ready to flash a custom bios, but I'm alittle unsure how the bios switches should be set up.

Although it has dual bios, I extracted both and there is no difference. Its the second switch i'm wondering about, its supposed to be write protection, do I need to switch it off in order to flash or does nvflash bypass that?

TIA!
