I dunno, I run most games at 4.1 and the 970 keeps me around 60fps @ 1440p. Anything above 60 wasted on me. My mobo is AM3 and I have no upgrade path unless I buy a new motherboard. And no way in hell am I dropping $100+ on a decent overclocking motherboard on dead end architecture. The 8320e's I've built for workstations used LOW end Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock mobo's that have zero overclocking potential.... trust me I tried. Who cares if the chips will do 4.5+ if the motherboards won't. They make great little ESXi or VM workstations though.

If I go Skylake i5 I'm probably looking at $500+ for new mobo, DDR4 ram, and CPU.

The real question here is can AMD maintain the performance/price?. Are they gonna sell it much cheaper than Intel or just 5-10% cheaper than intel. Because if their pricing is similar to Fury X vs 980Ti now, they are not going to get back the market share.

Yes SB IPC is minimum, and this is very relistic to expected, or where Zen CPU IPC will be no doubt.

But 8 Core Zen CPU at 4ghz, on Samsung 14nm Finfet this is impossible 4ghz is very big NO.Zen CPU is no doubt High IPC design CPU, and for the end it seems that people just are not aware/performance what this CPU can offer.wink.gif

8 Core Zen CPU will look like this no doubt

- 8 Cores/16 Threads, 3.3ghz/SB IPC maximum stock cpu frequency.Hm slow cpu compared to what, maybe Desktop Skylake Intel 4 or 6 Core CPU?biggrin.gif

if zen releases like that i think we can kiss amd good bye, my bet is consumer chip being 12 cores, 24 threads, turbo 4ghz

8C/16T tops imho, single core perf will be slightly better or slightly worse than haswell. Exact base freq hopefully that of 5960X. hyperthreading perf and overclocking headroom a total mystery. If it fails to meet these specs or comes to market later than summer 2017, AMD is toast.

Performance isn't really the same in every task - Haswell's about 70% above Piledriver (and skylake about 90% above) for x264 encoding so the IPC gains would have to be huge. I think Kaveri was slightly disproportionately good at x264 too when compared to piledriver

For reference, Skylake is ~38% above SB for that task at the same clock speed. If "40% above excavator" was met, Zen would be a fair amount faster than Sandy.

I'm going to leave these pictures here. Just don't understand how you people say A is X% faster than B, even for an unreleased architecture. At-least try to back your statement with a source. This post is not intended for a specific person.

Also if you know what you doing this will help.

When your bigger richer competitor PAYS people to take their CPU's rather than the "better" alternatives elsewhere what do you think will happen? Intel only have the cash/fabs to stay ahead because they broke the law to do it.

So should that be "real men when they find they can't compete on a technical standpoint, buy/cheat/use illegal business practices to get ahead and pay for all those fabs you talk about"

Maybe if AMD had got the custom back in the Athlon 64 days they wouldn't be in the mess they are now...... But Intel fans seem to gloss over the fact their favourite CPU vendor broke the law with outright disdain to get to the position that they are in today. For me it's

Buy Intel CPU's = Support illegal business practices..... So no thanks thumb.gif

*Groan! Comes into AMD thread. Whines a lot... About people whining alot!! wink.gif

Thanx.

Hoping AMDs Zen will be a big success and shake things up. But AMD almost need a miracle and everything to go perfectly to improve their prospects. Realistically I think Zen will be 2 years too late and AMD will be forced to resort to their normal slower but cheaper model. AMD have 3 massive problems the way I see it.
1 They are in a bad business position now.
2 If Zen fails or is mediocre things will get even worse.
3 They must do something after Zen to remain relevant Intel will not stay still and they need to compete year after year not just for 1 release.
As we move beyond the current silicon technology on to new CPU materials and processes R&D investment will have to increase. Are they up for the challenge I hope so but it is a huge challenge for them.

@Darkstalker420 my statement was sarcasm, because it was AMD's founder who said those words...
