Couple Quick Questions on Air Cooled Rig

Thread Starter
I have a secondary PC used primarily for Media in my bedroom which I am slowly working on building a custom case to put it in, for the time being it has been in a cheap Cougar case. The specs are in my sig under Media End Table.

This past weekend I took it with me on a 12 hour round trip drive in case i needed it for measurements, the whole PC was put back in the original case box with the 2 styrofoam supports.
I just hooked it back up for the first time since the trip and am assuming I hit a few too many bumps on the road because my temps are crazy high, 90+ on basic loads and like 55 idle. This makes me think the air cooler vibrated or bounced and loosened its thermal past bond. So the obvious fix is to clean and reapply paste and all should be well again.

The first question I have regarding this is how would it be best to transport the PC in the future so I don't have to do this every time?
I had it in the box as stated previously and it was on my back seat floor between the front and rear seats standing up. Would I be better of laying it on its side flat so that the cooler doesn't move up and down with gravity and perhaps take less bumps?
Should I try and put something extra inside the case to hold it in tighter or dampen any movement?

The other slight problem that I have is that I believe the cooler in general is a tough fit for my board. I recall it not being easy to clamp in and maybe always had a bit of wiggle to it, but temps were fine for normal use. Should I be expecting it to be a sturdy no motion fit once installed and if it wiggles I need to keep adjusting, or is there typically a little bit of play when pushing them with your finger? (Either twist or wobble)

The main issue is I have the Z87 Gryphon board with the Thermal Armor added so the armor takes up more space and is making it harder to attach the cooler, perhaps I need to just look into replacing it with a small and middle priced AIO cooler?
The AIO would have a smaller footprint and lock in better/tighter i believe and I like the look of the AIOs even if the cheaper ones don't perform the same as a top air cooler, but I was originally just trying to keep the cost down when I got my air cooler which still showed decent reviews for temps (on par with 212Evo), the issue is that the fit isn't the best with my board and armor. Maybe i should watch for used coolers or refurbished and try one of those, normally I don't like buying used, but this is a side PC that I don't want to drop another $50 into if I don't have to.

In line with the previous, is there a list of compatible or incompatible coolers for the Gryphon board when the armor is applied? Perhaps I need to see if Asus doesn't recommend I use the cooler I have due to fitment issues.

As usual, thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

The cooler should not be movable by hand with "reasonable" force. Like you should be worrying about cracking the motherboard or ripping out the socket before it will move.

Most likely the cooler needs to be removed, cleaned, new TIM applied and re-installed. Best way to transport is to lay system so motherboard is flat and brace coolers on all sides to it can't move.

I have not used the Hyper T4, but if it's mount is anything like top tier cooler mounts transporting it should not be a problem. I've transported systems with 155x130x168mm (WxDxH) with no problems even without bracing.

well, lets get the stupid question out of the way 1st. are your fans spinning? and if they are, what speed are they spinning at? are there any unusual noise from the system? is the HSF still attached to your CPU tightly?

have you examined the system to make sure everything is where it should be and not causing some kind of intermittent shorting? is the motherboard still on the case tightly?

there are a number of reasons why something can cause this type of issues so lets start the troubleshooting from the ground up.

My bad. redface.gif
I made the assumption user had the good sense to check if fans were working. redface.gif
post #6 of 11
well... i'm just saying that it's not the 1st time i've run into unusual temps to later find out one of the fans wasn't spinning up biggrin.gif especially after traveling/packing. maybe a piece of foam got stuck on the blade and was preventing it from spinning up smile.gif (no, i've never done that in real life. honest ;p I just know this because i know this biggrin.gif )

besides, there's been incidents that we helped resolve that the mounting clip of the HSF actually popped off during transit and the heatsink was only "half attached" smile.gif

reason i asked is because of the drastic temp he was getting. 90C on youtube load tells me there is more then just a TIM issue. something mechanical has to be the cause

I haven't spent much time on it yet as it isn't a high priority right now, but i am still pretty confident it is just a bad seal between the heatsink and processor.
I only quickly touched the heatsink after returning home and notice some rocking and twisting with little force on my part since I suspected it to likely loosen after that trip.

Again, I feel like after my initial install it still had a very minor amount of play and was extremely hard to secure due to the limited space provided after the thermal armor got added to the board. The vibrations and bumps from the trip just exaggerated the play.

Also, since I was pretty sure that I just need to reapply paste and secure tightly (wasn't expecting heat troubleshooting to be the focal point of my thread), I didnt mention that I was running it at an OC that wasn't dialed in yet since I have been struggling to get the settings right on that board. I just called it good enough for short term use and likely had it at a fairly high voltage, i believe it was 1.25v and 41 multiplier. When doing a simple windows update, I noticed the temps climbing so I decided to just revert back to default bios settings and redo the OC at a later date and certainly after reapplying TIM. With stock settings it is running much colder even though I haven't reseated the cooler yet, maybe 30C idle and 60C with media streaming.

@psyclum, I can certainly double check the fans and other things to be sure all is well there too, but I believe its just needing a reseating of my heatsink. I do know that no out of the ordinary sounds have occured, but thanks for mentioning all of that to be sure. Again, I havent spent much time on it in general yet so its something to quickly glance over when reseating. I didn't do anything special when transporting so I know there aren't foreign objects left in the fan to prevent spinning, but I could see how something that simple could have a big impact later on.

I think @doyll best explained my future method of trasporting or reinforced my initial thoughts, have the PC on its side so the motherboard is flat and for more piece of mind add some basic bracing or shock absorbing around the cooler. My biggest cause of the loosened cooler was letting it ride sideways or sitting up as if the PC was normally on a desk and allowed the cooler to take more motion from bumps and gravity.

I will report back when things have been reseated just to update everyone.

All that is left really is just my other few questions pertaining to the fit of that cooler and my mobo and if I should really be looking elsewhere for a replacement option that has a for sure snug fit.

yep, sounds like the mounting clip popped off in transit. just remount the HSF and you'll be good.

Just wanted to give a quick update that I finally got around to re-seating the cooler last night. I think the looseness problem was that one side of the metal bracket thing didn't have its screws as tight as can be, or they loosened as I took the cooler off, not 100% sure.
Either way I did a cleaning, new paste, and re-seat and seems a lot firmer now on the board, way less rocking or twisting motions allowed.

The hardest part is just getting it to attach since the thermal armor gets in the way and I cant have both metal brackets on first and then put the cooler with lever on after.
I had to get fancy with my fingers and place the entire cooler, lever, and one side of the bracket on all at once and then screw the bracket down without dislodging the lever from its slots on the cooler. It was a tight squeeze and awkward hand placement, but it seems nice and snug, just not a perfect way to mount it and hopefully didn't slide the thermal paste around or get attached too crooked in the process.

It seemed to run at 27-30C idle when I started it up and during a quick netflix stream only got to like the mid 40s maybe, I don't quite recall there.
This isn't a stress test by any means and is also still back to stock clocks for now, but it is on the right track.

Now my problem is going back to try and get a decent OC that is stable, I had a lot of trouble the last time I tried and will have to read up some more and likely ask for help in another thread since its been tricky or I am missing a particular setting.

Either way, I just figured I'd report in that the re-seating has been done and feels more firm so I think that part of the battle is complete. Now I just have to transport it on its side next time and hope it stays snug.
