Is it possible to run a new GPU with my poor old Athlon II X4 620? - Page 8

Guys I tried hard. Very hard. My back and my hand is hurting from the unlimited times I manually reseted the cmos with my screwdriver.

I managed to boot with my previous(before the gpu/ram/cooler upgrade) successful overclock @ 3.250GHz (250 FSB, NB/HT=2000Mhz and +0.025v at core and cpu nb)
It's only possible when I run my Ram @ 1000MHz. Anything higher than that and my system will refuse to boot.
I did manage to boot around 3350 (255-260 FSB) but after only a few minutes I had some huge display disruption which made ***** myself and immediately reset to the previous overclock.

Is it that bad (gaming wise) to run my memory @ 1000mhz from the stock speed of 1600mhz?
Does an overclock of NB to 2200 or 2400mhz will give me a substantial boost gaming wise or it doesn't worth it?
I don't think It will be stable if I overclock my NB frequency though..

It's safe to presume that main problem that prevents me of going higher is my new Ram(Either its double size or its worse overclocking ability)

I'm very happy with my new cooler though.

After half an hour in Prime95 I have full load temperature of 49c and in idle 29c.
With the stock cooler and the same overclock with the exception of lower vcore voltage of 1.375v I had 72c ( thumbsupsmiley.png ) and in idle 47c....

Do you see the ram frequency as 1000MHz in CPU-Z?
The option in BIOS is just a multiplier setting, it's [Host Clock] x [RAM Multiplier]. If the value doesnt change as the CPU Host Clock goes up, you have to calculate it yourself.
Also sometimes DIMMs larger than 2GB work only when you accomodate the second channel first, DIMM3-4 in your motherboard.
Try this:
1.Load defaults
2.Set RAM Multi to 6.66=1333MHz and restart
3.Go to DRAM Configuration again and take note of the SPD settings
4.Set Ram Multi to 5.33 and restart
5.Set Dram Timing Items to Manual, use SPD values, restart
6.Set FSB to 250MHz
7.Set HT Link to x8
8.PCIe to 100MHz
9.Restart

I dit it like that Marie. With auto timing, manual timing and the SPD settings for various frequencies from 1050-1666Mhz. None of those speeds settings works at the same time with a CPU overclock.
At stock cpu speed I can run stable with any ram frequency I want.

In CPU-Z its 499.9MHz(=1000Mhz) right now.
The (auto) timings are:

5
5
5
15
19
1T

For some unknown reason I had bigger score by 80 points in Passmark's 8.0 memory test than the one I run in 1600Mhz frequency(SPD manual timing) and 2.6Ghz cpu speed.

Even that kind of overclock gave me significant boost in games.

In Witcher 3 for example I still have some rare spikes but in cities with ultra graphics @ 1080p resolution I have over 45 FPS and over 55 fps in any other part of the game.

In Ryse Son of Rome @ 2.6Ghz I had 30-35 fps and a continuing cpu bottleneck. @ 3.25Ghz its like a well balanced scale were both CPU and GPU hover around 98-100% usage and my fps in max settings are over 55 avg.

In Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor benchmark I have an average of 65 FPS in max settings overclocked. I can't remember exactly the score before the overclock but I think it was under 50 FPS with CPU bottleneck in some parts.

The RAM speed makes at most few percent difference in benchmarks not designed specifically to test RAM so you would be fine with the 1000 MHz base. Besides, with the over-clock the real speed would be closer to ~1300 MHz and that is pretty decent speed with as tight timings as you noted. I mean 5-5-5-19 and 1T is pretty damn awesome for DDR3 as far as I understand. Tighter timings can reduce latency of RAM while lower base frequency lowers the available max bandwidth - which one is more beneficial depends on particular application but my gut feeling is that most applications should benefit a little more from lower latency than from higher bandwidth (as most applications do not max out memory bandwidth). In real life the difference should not be noticeable to human as the difference you encounter should be in the magnitude of some microseconds.

So the configuration with 3.2 GHz OC and the lowest multiplier on RAM sounds like the good combo.

650 MHz is a respectable overclock. Congratulations.

Two months from now you will get the itch and gain a couple hundred mega-hurts.
