S8S On Air!

Thread Starter
I am building a PC in an S8S. And it is going to be air cooled.

I have a I7-6700K System with 2 x EVGA 980 GTX TI SC BP so lots of heat.

I already ordered the case with drop in 120x3's up top and 2x120's in the front. I got the half window ventilated sides.

I was going to start with 3x120 Noctua NF-F12 PWM fans in the front and one in the back. The case is so long though that perhaps I would be better just throwing a six pack of fans in the top? Would leave the front kind of ugly with no fans or anything though. And the horizontal tray should have air supply between the video cards. Could also buy new panels and bits.

Anyone else got an air cooled S8S rig? Care to share their thoughts?

Hey man. I'm in the exact same boat as you. Ordered my S8S last week - planning on doing an air cooled system as well. Gonna follow this one forum and will let ya know if I hear anything of interest to ya.

I personally was boring and went with a solid top cover however it should have the 6x120s below the it. Would definitely consider changing and ordering a vented top cover if it makes a significant difference.

Are you going with a Noctua CPU cooler?

Yep. I put a D15 on it. Going to put two 120's in the back. One 120 in the front and 2 140's in the front. And four 140's in the top. That's max fannage. I will have 3 zones of fans. Still deciding on the metrics but I am thinking the 2 140's in the front will kick in first followed by the 120 trio and then the roof. Probably overkill.

So you're looking at 8 total fans? Max fannage indeed. Have you looked into putting any filters over the intake fans? If so, which ones? Looking for suggestions on what might match the black S8S well.

9 fans.. Perhaps 10 or 11 if I put some inside lol. I am going to start with three and work my way up. Stop when It works. So I will start with 2x140 in front and 1 x 120 in back. As for filters. I was going to try filter foam and magnet tape. See if I can DIY it.

Haha hey man whatever gets the job done. I personally may stick with 3 intakes and 2 exhaust. May get a vented top and a few more fans depending on you're experimentation. Post pics if ya can. I'd like to see how you do the filter.

Case shipped yesterday so should get it next week. All I bought were 2 x 140 fans and a 120 to 140 adapter so far. I would like to keep all the fans the same either 120 or 140. Prefer 140 but if the adapter doesn't work I may go multiple types. I dunno.. Waiting till next week to find out.

Well, Tha adapter only works in the top left front. I put the two 140's in the flex bays. The system is playable but not ideal. Needs a fan in the top left if you have SLI. There is no clearance above the CPU cooler for anything. There is too above the SLI for a 140 exhaust. I can put another pair of 140's. Put one in the top left and another in the top as exhaust. It runs fairly warm. Gaming with headphones is medicina.
