Need Build Advice for Python and R programming rig. For Stockbroker.

I have been asked to build a PC for someone who will be using the aforementioned applications to create and use mining programs. I have no idea what level of hardware is necessary for this and was hoping for some input.

My initial thoughts are that this does not really require that significant processing power. But I know some mining applications do require a hefty video card.

I'll be posting this in the AMD General forum as well incase we get into "that" discussion....

My clients big complaint is that he can do all this on his laptop (likely 4 or more years old), but he spends a lot of time waiting on things to process.

I told him we should probably be able to get this done for under a grand, but I don't think 11 or 1200 would seem unreasonable. Also "mining" may have been the wrong term. He will be creating and using statistical analysis programs that pull from large data sets.

EDIT:

Just trying to get a feel for where most of the horsepower needs to be. Hard drive, CPU, GPU or RAM. Not sure what portion of system those types of applications draw the most from.

What he is going to need will vary highly based on the computations he's running in his code and the size of the dataset. As a minimum, you are looking for a lot of CPU/RAM, emphasis on the RAM. My experience with R is limited but I know that applications for R programming like all their data in memory. Again, the problem here being that you need to know the size of the data set and what will be done with it... For example, if he has a massive data set, and then has a linear model, your memory use could be much larger than the size of data. Another question to ask is whether or not they are using an application that can leverage CUDA or openCL, in which case you may need to sink some of the money into a decent GPU.

The whole thing could be done for 1k-1200, but you will probably be cutting corners. Might be worth it to look into a last gen server mobo (or even x58) and then grab a decent Xeon and pile on the DDR3 at the best price you can get it at. Keep in mind that a server board would likely require ECC RAM and may have very specific approved memory.

If all of this starts to seem a bit overkill you could always put him on an Amazon EC2 as well tongue.gif

I think what we are talking about here is datamining, e.g.,, looking for needles in a haystack. The key to most of this is optimization of the search algorithms. I consult for a company that has a couple of patents for doing such searches in the pharmaceutical area and all of their software is written in Java and it runs pretty fast. I'm not sure that the GPU makes any difference in cases like this one. There are several ways that things could be configured - more memory, a dedicated SSD cache disk, and a fast CPU.
