I currently own a Gigabyte R9 390X G1 Gaming OC 8gb as well as Gigabyte 980 Ti Xtreme.

I initially got the 390x as it was the best price performer (imo). The 390x is a really amazing card as it can run almost all games maxed out with full FPS with the AAA (Witcher 3 etc.) games running around 40 to 55 fps at 1080p.

But the upgrade itch still wouldn't go away so I decided to grab myself a 980 ti Xtreme. At 1080p, the upgrade was underwhelming as you could pretty much put both cards at even on real world usage (ignore fps count). But once you go to higher resolutions then that's when you feel the upgrade.

Now to answer your question, I would say go with the 390x as it will make you a very happy gamer at 1080p. If you plan to upgrade to QHD or 4K in the future then go with the 980 Ti.

Hope this helps!
