[hardcoregamer] Shenmue III ‘Slacker Backer’ Campaign Launches Because $6 Million Wasn’t Enough

Shenmue III raised over six million dollars during its Kickstarter campaign, but that wasn’t enough — it wasn’t enough! As such, Ys Net has launched a secondary “Slacker Backer” crowdfunding page allowing even more fans to shut up and have their money taken.

The good news for those who somehow didn’t get around to backing the game or who want to raise their pledge is that many of the rewards are back in stock and ready to be had. All funds from this campaign will also go towards stretch goals like bigger areas and question marks.

source

Edit: Adding in another source that better reflects what it is going on.
Quote:
The crowdfunding period for Shenmue 3 has been reopened and extended, developer Ys Net Inc. announced today in a press release.

According to an update to the game's campaign page, the team led by series creator Yu Suzuki has decided to give those who were unable to contribute before the previous deadline another opportunity to do so.

The "Slacker Backer period" begins now and will continue until midnight on Dec. 31. A new option to pledge via PayPal has been added, as well as new rewards for backers.
Quote:
While it may seem surprising that the long-awaited new entry in the Shenmue series, which became the the most-funded video game in Kickstarter history after its campaign launched following its E3 reveal, is looking for more money, this is not unprecedented.

Star Citizen received pledges totalling more than four times its initial goal, and has since opened its own private crowdfunding page to collect more money. inXile Entertainment also added an option to donate by PayPal after its The Bard's Tale 4 reached its funding goal.

source

I'd change the title to the new source "Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign reopens for ‘slacker backers’" and delete the current one but with so many replies that might be frowned upon.

Sony was involved from the start. I don't see why they require any sort of crowdfunding. It's utterly absurd.

Sony admitted helping but they didn't say how they were helping. From what Ys claims this isn't about the game. It is about those stretch goals and to help those slackers get the tier rewards. This will go straight through xmas in case anyone wishes to ask for this as a gift. What's even better is that they are now taking paypal payments so they do not have to worry about sharing 5% with kickstarter. When you think about it 5% of 10m really is a lot of money so who could blame them? Besides they already shared the initial 6m with that greedy kickstarter place which allowed them to gain the highest amount of crowd funding we have ever seen.

Hope we reach the 10m this time. I just know if we do they will up it to 15 or 20m with another goal that will make shenmue 3 even better. mad.gif

A glance at their FAQ sheds light on this good ride issue.

Why is the PC version of Shenmue III not offered on this website?
At the moment, we are discussing the PC version with the related parties.
source

Anyone else find that part concerning? Who is this related party? I helped fund the first "stretch goals" and I wasn't asked so apparently it isn't up to those who funded the first time. I'm afraid to ask if this could get any worse.

The guys who made Planetary Annihilation asked for $650,000 and they ended up getting over ten million. At what point does this other Kickstarter crowdfund top that one?

Sorry but I don't follow your claims here... rolleyes.gif

I thought they made 2.2M through kickstarter? I don't consider early access to be crowd funding. Not that any of this important. The fact still remains that unlike Planetary Annihilation, shenmue 3 already had the funding for the game. Kickstarter was only used to prove that people were interested and to add in "extra" fun stuff.

Edit: Let me admit that I was wrong. Star Citizen is the most crowd funded game. Shenmue is just the most kickstarter funded game.

Meanwhile, RSI's stretch goal for 63M to 64M was adding... pets. And most other stretch goals were adding a new... ship. For a million bucks.
