Cortana (and the associated searchui.exe process) has been completely disabled on my system (among other things). The information is out there, and involves taking ownership of some system files and deleting them. Not hard, but not super easy either. Google is your friend.

Is it possible to close the program and the services will still be fully blocked?

It doesn't appear to do much at least when I ran it. Few reg entries to block stuff and the host file update. Those will remain after the program is closed.

There's been plenty of posts where people say hosts file update does nothing, not sure if that applied to all Wintel or just 10.

I already used a type of Norton for servers on my personal PC and told it to block all the setting windows puts out and in. Anything that goes out and in has to ask permission by Norton and anything that has windows related blocked.

If editing the hosts file does nothing, why should this?

Im just going to (hardware) firewall block the IPs anyway.

All of this seems futile anyway, Windows will always be like this.

I dont trust running VMs on 10 even.

That would not surprise me at all in Win10. It might be more helpful filtering at the gateway (router/firewall).

Have you tried blocking IP's in the hosts file and then checked whether it worked? I am running Win 10 in VM and have added all sites and IP's to the hosts file and I can't ping them. I get:

Unless Win 10 have somehow patched around this those links are blocked in my Win 10.

Of course putting those entries to hosts file and then you as a user trying will fail. That isn't evidence that a Service or a Program; the OS itself cannot avoid that completely. Like I said, plenty of posts here but myself I can't be bothered monitoring my IP traffic with wireshark or something sitting and waiting for a call-home to trigger! I'll leave that to someone much more paran.. I mean dedicated smile.gif

I'm also quite skeptical about those programs which popped like mushrooms. Unless we found out that those completely blocked everything I cannot trust them. I'm also thinking that MS knows about those and will bypass them soon if they didn't already.
