AMD GPU Drivers: The Real Truth. - Page 39

Actually without taking into account the architectural changes, HBM2 is already going to double the bandwidth.

Yes, the issue was mostly related to parameter cache sizing as well as overall inefficiencies in how the geometry processor handled small triangles (wasted resources).

Think of it this way, Hawaii, Tonga and Fiji each had 4 Shader engines. This gave them the same ROP and RBE count. With a 14nm shrink, AMD will be adding more Shader engines. That means at least twice the geometry processors, RBE and rasterizers. There's a reason why they needed a larger L2 cache wink.gif

So we're also looking at more than twice the tessellation performance (improved geometry processor and twice as many). More than twice the memory bandwidth (improved memory controller + HBM2). More than twice the shader performance (two times the ALUs and improved ALUs are possible but not yet on Greenland's little brother (the first to release) Baffin, Greenland will double Fiji in that dept). More than twice the caching performance. An improved hardware scheduler (graphics command processor) and less leakage and a higher clocked part. Higher clocks and twice the rops means more than twice the pixel throughput. More shader engines means more texturing units and higher clocks means more than twice the Texture mapping capabilities. That's why it is a up to 2.5 times the performance per watt architecture.

So yeah...knowing that compute performance wasn't holding Fiji back, we can have a pretty good idea of how Greenland will perform relative to Fiji.

On that note, I doubt we'll see a dual Fiji card. Probably a canned project.

Like Lisa Su said, this time next year... We will all be thinking that AMD is back. Not bs at all. Crimson, FreeSync, OpenGPU, HDR. AMD will offer higher image quality, better in-game effects, better DX12 performance (and Vulcan performance), better DX11 performance (hint...improved Graphics command processor) and solid drivers. Since OpenGPU will work on nvidia and AMD (or heck Intel iGPUs) with code being open for optimization for either architectures, Game works will die off. FreeSync is already killing G-Sync off (more FreeSync than G-Sync panels slated for release.

Basically, AMD is set for a venerable graphics coup d'etat.

I will eat my hat if AMD doesn't release FuryX2. It was delayed because they are waiting to release it with their VR push.

hmmmm

interesting indeed, that could actually answers a lot of question but

I could still play Battlefield 4 at high settings withing 50 FPS range, and this with my current CPU 1055t and with my old HD4890, now I don't know if this was meant to happen, I mean I thought that battlefield was a heavy game

can someone post battlefield benches so I can see what happen???

Don't remember seeing this thread earlier, also didn't think the CPU overhead on AMD cards was such an issue to make a detailed topic about...
But that's me only ever having performance problems on select DX9 and < OGL3.2 titles, I don't think I have any games that struggle on DX11 high settings bar the unigine valley bench. Running at native 4k though is definitely more efficient than 1080p on my 290X.

I will re-mention though that there are some shader compiler oddities for GCN that can make as much as a 500% performance difference for select stages, wouldn't surprise me if there were still a fair few games that could use optimisation in that regard (mostly compiler-level).

a sinhle card isnt a problem, but if you use 2x 290(x) and an i5 in some games (that get more than 70-75fps) it will be

When AMD runs worse in FO4, it's GW's fault. When AMD runs better, it's GW's accidental fault. tongue.gif

GPU A should be at position X relative to GPU B, and it should forever stay that way in every game. hmmsmiley02.gif

Interesting.

As a previous Kepler user for 2+ years [now Fury X] I witnessed and actual benchmarked the constant loses. My FireStrike scores dropped tremendously. Performance was clear getting worse when the 970 dropped. My performance with AMD this time around has increased and that's what I continue to look forward to.
