[Official] Wasabi Mango UHD550 Owners Club - Page 38

A quick update for those who read the last 30+ posts -- I returned the UHD550 and got a refund. Accessorieswhole was fair about the return -- after submitting the photos and explaining the issue -- the seller tried to make the transaction right by offering partial credit, which I declined. They finally sent a pre-paid FedEx return label my way, a few days later I saw a refund in my bank statement.

I agree with the last few comments about large LCD panel transactions. Buyers and sellers want these transactions to work. Beyond the minor manufacturer panels defects -- these fragile panels must also survive their journey to their destination, including a dozen possible failure points between the Seller's warehouse and your address. Panels sold by big-box stores share the same challenges -- and you can read through thousands of personal experiences published on forums and their store review sections which tell of customers who have returned their Samsung, LG and Sony tvs 3-4 times before settling on one with acceptable quality.

In my opinion, it's faster to go through this QC process at a local store, some Best Buy locations will let you confirm a panel has no obvious problems before taking it home. Those with a Skylake laptop or tablet can quickly run a 4k full screen powerpoint presentation and check off problems like dead pixels, light bleed, uniformity, etc.

Just curious how the Wasabi Mango stands up against an HDR 4k television like the LG E6. I am in the market for a new television and I really think I am leaning towards the E6 at the moment but how does the Mango compare? I know it isn't an HDR/OLED panel but what are your likes and dislikes if I may ask. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much about HDR. It's an emerging technology, and very few media supports it so far, much like what 4k is now but within an even smaller niche. 4k support is growing pretty well, however.

You cannot have an HDR screen and expect everything to benefit from the increased dynamic range. Its like playing an 8bit video on a 10bit screen. You will have 8bit colors and gradients although you are on a 10bit screen. HDR media has an extra bit that is dedicated to screen luminance, so media (think a few games have HDR support too) has to be encoded to utilize that bit in order for it to work. Plus, these TVs are still improving their HDR performance.

I think next year will be the year that all of these new technologies will fall into place.

Well these are B+, A panels.
Those are new HDR 4K quantom dot, nano crystal, lightsaber tech. wink.gif
What ya think?

Nano crystal is Samsung's way of saying quantum dot. Both technologies have one goal: a cost effective way of getting a wider color gamut. Unfortunately, not a lot of mainstream media benefits from a wide color gamut (over saturated colors). Professional color work and the few movies and videos that support 10bit or higher color depths will benefit from qd technology.

As it stands now, quantum dot/nano crystal acts as a filter between the backlight and LCD panel. The tvs that use these technologies right now use either ips-type or va-type panels. Oled cannot use qd.

Panel grade determines the functionality of the pixels, with lower grade panels (which could be any panel type, like IPS or VA) having more defective pixels. Screen uniformity and panel grade are mutually exclusive. Screen uniformity has to do with the smoothness of the filter covering the backlight array. Picture a piece of paper covering the LEDs that are used as the backlight. If the paper is wavy, it is going to cause the light coming from the LEDs to become uneven, which causes ununiform luminance. Curved panels also suffer from this.

Backlight bleed occurs when there is pressure on the LCD panel. You either have pressure from the frame of the monitor, or pressure from the panel/backlight unit (if the backlight and LCD are put together in one piece (monitors) instead of being separate (TVs)).

When my UHD550 arrived broken I almost went with a large TV instead but decided against it because of the PWM backlight flicker issue.
I got a UHD490 and so far I am very happy with it. I didn't get a PP version either but if there are dead pixels I can't find them.
The UHD490 has a larger bezel around the screen which seems to better protect the corners from being cracked in transit.

I'm very happy with it so far.

I have been having an issue with mu UHD550, hopefully someone more tech savvy than me can help. Panel looks great but right after startup the screen will go black for a split second, sometimes right after startup, other times a few minutes after. This happened from day one, but it would only happen once, right after startup, after which I could game for hours without it happening again. A couple weeks ago I was playing a game and it happened 4 times within 5 minutes. I updated the firmware, then switched from my high-end 3 meter HDMI 2.0 cable to the included data port cable. I haven't had the screen go black again in a game but it does still do this right after startup. I am fine with this little quirk as long as it happens at startup and that is it. Anyone else have this issue? Could it be cable related or is it a symptom of a major problem?

Side note: the 10 bit option is only available in NVIDIA control panel when using a data port cable, only 8 bit will be available when using HDMI 2.0 cable.

Hi guys, can anyone please let me know distance between the 2 feet? I am considering getting this but my desk is 1200mm wide and from photos the feet seems to be very close to the border and the front end even sticks out?
Thanks!
