First ever overclock Intel i7 960

Thread Starter
I want to overclock my i7 960, but I can't find a proper guide for it.
PC specs:

processor: Intel Core i7 960 @3.20GHz Bloomfield 45nm Technology
RAM: 6,00 GB Triple-Channel DDR, @534MHz (8-8-8-20)
DRAM Frequency: 2138.0 MHz
NB Frequency: 2138.0 MHz
Motherboard: AsusTeK Computer INC. P6X58D Premium
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 1024MB GDDR5
BIOS: American MegaTrends Inc. version 1002, date 8/29/2010
PSU: AOpen Z400-08FC
Cooling: stock cooling... click

I hope you can help me out here, thanks in advance.

The first thing you should do is...

Overclocking Intel Core i7 LGA1366 processors

First thing before you even think about over clocking that CPU...what PSU? What cooling?

What are current stock idle and load and what are ambient temps?

What if he's on stock cooling?

What if his ram is rated for 1.5v?

EDIT: what multiplier are you sugessting that he run with 190 base? And why 1.24 on the ioh? That would usually only be needed for stability when running multi GPU and high CPU over clock.

Maybe he could need those voltages, maybe he does run multi GPU config but unless you have asked that first... I don't think is really a good sugesstion.

Honestly... Good start would be to wait for op to say what cooling? PSU, ambients, idle and load. Without that information anything is a wild guess.

Sorry if I seem a little harsh but I'm just seeing guesswork

lol any ddr3 dimm can handle 1.65 volts no problem. Im running ram rated at 1.5 1333 cas 10 that are crappy hynix sticks out of a dell at ddr3 1900 cas 8 1.75 lol the only problem he would have is if hes on stock cooler. From testing on that board/bios ive noticed that 1.24 ioh helps stability when running single or dual gpus. But yea i agree. lol. Psu shouldnt matter unless he has a 500 watt. Im running dual 4870s and a overclocked i7 on a 650 watt. Oh and 21 multi. Its my exact settings just modded a little. I doubt he could run 1.15 at 4ghz on his chip lol

And do your suggestions respect the qpi/vtt rule of 0.5v?
Like I say I truly don’t mean to diss you just it seems a little assuming and sloppy as an offering to somebody for overclock help that is all, wouldn’t want anyone to damage their hardware.
I don’t see the link between ram voltage and cpu stock cooler? What are you saying there? If anything I would expect too high a ram voltage would make the ram run hot or just die. Don’t see a link between ram voltage and cpu stock cooler. Now I do see the link between qpi/vtt and stock cpu cooler wink.gif

You have me interested in the W3520 clocks speed, I have for a while been looking just out of interest and boredom to try out a 1366 Xeon on my mobo. Now I know the 12 thread X5660 etc. all work on my board so I think the W3520 would, what is the max multiplier you can lock in place for all cores at any one time? You have my attention as I would love to push all 8 threads at 4.5 GHz provided the vcore is not too high.

So sorry to derail this thread for a moment but:
What multi can you lock in on all cores on the W3520
What vcore do you need and how stable is it?

really depends on the chip. I got a cherry batch but, Im running 4.5 1.39 vcore in bios no ht. 1.3 qpi 217 bclk, ddr3 1700 iirc cas 7. With ht on i need 1.43 in bios as my vdroop on this board is insane. Also stock qpi on this board is 1.2 so you can run 1.65 safely and 1.25 allows up to 1.75 vdimm although i have ran 1.9 dim and 1.35 qpi for quick benches no prob. Hynix h9c tfr based ram sticks. Thats my bench settings. Like i said my daily 24/7 is 4.0 1.19 vcore in bios,1.15 in windows 1600 cas 8 1.2 qpi. These chips are godly depending on the batch. Batch number on my chip is 3845b. I would suggest trying to find one.. All of the ones out of that batch i have seen have done 4.0 at under 1.2 volts. Also 220 + bclk requires 105 pcie clock wink.gif max i have booted on a suicide run is 4.8 ht on at 1,.45 in windows . Cant test 1.5 as im only on a h100i lol. I gotta get my loop back in action with my tec setup ;p. I have my bios crossflashed to the p6x58d so you can lock 21 multi without it downclocking due to going over 130 watt tdp.

I get 4.4Ghz HT disabled for the same voltage you get for your 4.5Ghz. Keep seeing them on eBay for cheap and like i say just curious, would ideally like a X5670 but every time i get paid money is gone on bills etc so may get W3520 and see what i can do to it tongue.gif
Cheers.

There I am again:

About the cooling, you'll beat me to death.... I got the stock cooling, this one:
click

PSU: AOpen Z400-08FC

Temperatures at normal use: Here
Temperature of CPU goes up to 95 degrees Celcius. So I know I need a better cooler, but which one will be good enough for me (30 euros, 40 at max)

RAM voltage: 1.5 V
