First ever overclock Intel i7 960 - Page 2

Ok so first before you can do any overclocking, like you say, you will need better cooling.Could go for AIO water cooler or just stick with a good quality tower fan cooler.

Some worth considering in order of pref:
Noctua NH-D14
Prolimatech Megahalems
CM Hyper 212+

Get on eBay and have a look at used ones or on here on the Market place
Generally speaking the more heatpipes the better at moving the heat away from CPU surface quicker, allowing for lower temps/better overclocking/stability.
The Noctua NH-D14 & Prolimatech Megahalems both have 6 heatpipes which is why i would choose them over the CM Hyper 212+ (4 heatpipes)

When i get cash for upgrades im getting a new smaller case and ditching my watercooling and getting a Noctua NH-D14.

That PSU, i dont recognise it, but that means nothing as im no PSU expert, it does kinda look like a generic but never judge a book by a cover, its all about whats inside. Do you happen to know if its of good quality? If i had to pick then i would say it may not be suitable. Best checking with somebody who knows a good amount about PSU' you would need the help of either @shilka or @TwoCables

Like i say, im out of touch with the latest coolers available, you will be able to get more up to date advice on here from some of the other guys but those that i mentioned are still solid options and may be found on eBay used for cheap. There are just so many coolers available now its difficult to keep up.

Get a cooler, check if your PSU is up to the job, then move on to overclocking gunner.gif I would bet with the i7 960 you could get some good speed out of it with the right cooler. Good luck and i will subscribe to this thread to see how you get on thumb.gif

About the cooler: 70 euros for a cooler is a bit too much in my opinion. I found a cheaper option, the Scythe Mugen 4. A Dutch site did tests on different coolers, and as from the results I think the Scythe Mugen 4 has a better performance/price ratio. click here. You'll probably need translations biggrin.gif
I think that should be fine.

PSU: Output Voltage
+3.3, +5, ±12 V

That's what I found on a site. I don't know what is really necessary?

Not a bad find that, looks nice, just be sure to check for clearance of ram slots etc thumb.gif
Did you google any comparisons for 1366 coolers?

RAM slots? Explain?

And that was the best cooler I could find for the price and 1366.

And another question: I suppose I will be changing the voltage of the core. Does changing the Vcore shorten the life span of my i7?
depends. Im running 4.0 at really low voltage. My stock vcore is 1.125 and i run 4ghz at 1.175. This processor will last 20 years at these settings probably. And make sure your heatsink doesnt cover your ram slots lol

I meant that if for instance you had some fancy ram with big/high heatspreaders like the Old Kingston HyperX then you would have to make sure there is sufficient clearance and that the heatsink was not going to block the ram slots. Only happens in certain scenarios but well worth a quick google before you buy.

Your CPU only has a certain lifespan anyway, technically speaking adding any further voltage or heat could shorten the lifespan, thing is, nobody can say for sure how much. But if you keep within certain voltages and temperatures then its not going cause a major issue. I have been running my i7 930 at over 1.35v for 4-5 years now and it still works fine, there was an initial bump in vcore needed after a few weeks but that is normal and common.

Keep it cool, dont be silly with voltages and you will be ok. Best thing you can do is read up about the different max voltages in overclocking guides. You will get different opinions, i read up lots, tested the water and made my own mind up.

I kind of don't know how to look up whether the Scythe Mugen 4 will cover my RAM slots on my motherboard..
