Run msconfig and look under boot advanced options and make sure maximum memory is not checked.

Does the same thing happen if you run with just 16 gb? The two 8gb sticks.

updated bios. yes. same thing.

just reseated the ram and it got worse. went from 4 available to 2

Might be a stretch but remove the CPU, blow out the slot with canned air, check contacts and reseat.

I'm curious what happens when you run with just the 2 x 2gb sticks.

I saw this thread about a similar issue - http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1694156/hardware-reserved-ram-8gb.html

The conclusion to that thread seemed to be that the two 8gb sticks were not on the supported vendor list, and it was an issue with the memory and not the motherboard.

I solved the problem saturday night. Apparently, it was as simple as not having XMP turned on in the bios. lol. Thanks for all your ideas.
