Asus H87i-Plus front USB 3.0 ports doesn't detect USB 3.0 external hdd properly

Hi all,

Found some similar issues on the internet but unfortunately I couldn't find a definite answer, so decided to post here.

I have a Seagate Freeagent GoFlex USB 3.0 external hdd. It works OK if I connect it through the mobo's back USB 3.0 ports.

However, when I connect it using the front USB 3.0 ports, it doesn't detect it properly. Symptoms are:
- Either totally not detected (Not even visible in the Control Panel > Computer Management > Disk Management), or,
- Intermittently detected (Drive letter appears in My Computer), but asking me to format the drive. In this case, in Window's Device Manager, the hdd is displayed under Disk Drives > Seagate FreeAgent SCSI Drive. CMIIW, but I'm sure it's not an SCSI drive.

Now, using the same front USB 3.0 ports, it works in Window's Safe mode, but I'm not sure if it's in USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 mode.

FYI, due to CPU cooler dimension (Noctua NH-L12i), I need to use this cable, since the original USB 3.0 cable is too damn stiff to bend:

I connect the original front USB 3.0 cable to that slim cable.

My system, if it helps at all:
- Processor: Intel I5-4670
- Mobo: Asus H87i-Plus (BIOS version: 2003, Release 11/03/2014)
- Memory: Kingston 8 GB
- VGA: MSI 7870 TwinFrozr III
- Cooler: Noctua NH-L12i
- Case + PSU: Silverstone SG08, with 600 watt PSU.
- Win 7 Ultimate

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Firstly, have you installed the USB 3.0 drivers provided by your motherboard manufacturer via their website's driver support page?

Double check if USB 3.0 is enabled in the BIOS. The setting called 'XHCI Hand-off' may need to be enabled to fix this issue.

Install the Asmedia and Intel USB 3.0 drivers if you haven't already.

Also this might help as well. Try updating to the latest BIOS which is BIOS Version: '2003' from 2015/03/25 release.

Thanks for your reply!

I tried enabling XHCI Hand-Off, but it doesn't help.

I tried installing the Asmedia driver - but how do I know if it's installed correctly?

I think there would be a entry listed as asmedia USB port hub or something like that listed in the USB devices section from device manager.

I tried installing the Asmedia drivers, but it seems that nothing happened. I can only see Intel drivers.

This is my Device Manager when I plug the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex drive through my front USB 3.0 ports (after installing the Asmedia)
