even if this can't do its rated speeds on z97, still gonna be faster than normal SSD, doesn't take up any hard drive slots, and frees up lots of room on the regular SSD for other things.

I'm using a 240Gb Kingston HyperX Predator in my M7H, SLI will still work but non of your other PCI slots will work while using the M.2 SSD, other then that no other drawbacks as far as what you can and cannot use on your motherboard. To be honest I think I wasted my money as it doesn't add any notable performance increase over my two 1Tb 840 Evo's (not in raid).

But I mainly got it for my OCD, so I didn't have a gap in between my first PCI-E slot and CPU! rolleyes.gif

But on topic this drive has some awesome pricing compared to what I paid for my predator and it's also black like the predator unlike the Intel.....
yum, nice!

EDIT:

Still can't seem to find an SM951 NVMe in the States. Kind of upsetting!

A 1TB version would be an instant buy for me. It would be a good excuse to update mobo/CPU too.

not really, I had to bench it to make sure it was working properly!

Yeah I've been waiting for this one or something better with the trifecta: nvme, 3x4, vnand. I don't even care about the speed, want it just to do away with sata in my case.

I'll get an pci-e adapter card as well so it'll have better airflow.

I'd recommend putting a heatsink on the controller. Try to have some air blowing over that heatsink. It may even be worth getting a heatsink on the NAND module nearest to the controller too, judging by the IR imagery.

You may have to cut it with a saw to make sure it doesn't interfere though with the GPUs. Either that or go with a U.2 adapter. You could get a U.2 SSD like the 750 2.5" version.

Another option is a PCI-E SSD with a riser.

Oh wow.

Will this SSD have reduced performance on X99 as it only uses DMI 2.0, if not, I will be buying the 512GB version

No as long as you're connected in the slot that's directly wired to the CPU PCI-E lanes.
