gas expands to fill the "container" it is in...so how can it create a "bubble" of fresh air?

The only real benefit to recycling was to landfills. I think a big reason for this was all the greenhouse gasses spewed into the atmosphere from the garbage trucks needed to collect it, and from the electricity needed to process it, far exceeded manufacturing items from scratch.

Now, these numbers weren't the same in nations like Germany, where most electricity comes from nuclear power plants, and a large part of their recycling effort is fueled by renewable fuel sources. So it's not like it's impossible to make recycling "green" just the way the USA does it, is certainly not even close to "green" at least from a greenhouse gas standpoint.

Also, @Mad Pistol, I've never heard of this but I was viewing the website for the Alen ionizer hanzy mentioned and it said this...
I've never heard of this, I wonder how it can be harmful??

Bro. You had better hope your air ionizer is somehow not producing ozone. I cant even imagine how people could buy these and not know about the health hazards associated with them...
Ozone is one of the primary components of smog.

well, looks like your purifier did release lots of ozone:

What Ozone Is and Why It Is Dangerous

Most people, even if they do not know what ozone is, have heard of it, usually in context of the ozone layer in the atmosphere that protects the earth from ultraviolet light. However, ozone is not so benevolent a substance when we come into close contact with it. As the Environmental Protection Agency says: "Good Up High, Bad Nearby."

Ozone is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms, rather than the two that comprise a "normal" oxygen molecule. The third atom can relatively easily become detached from the other two, and once free, it will interact with other substances. One of these "other substances" is your body. Even small amounts of ozone, according to the EPA, "can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and throat irritation," as well as even worse effects. Those with asthma may find their conditioned worsened by exposure to ozone, and ozone also reduces the body's ability to combat respiratory infections.

In other words, those who purchase ozone-generating air purifiers to improve their indoor air quality may discover that the "solution" is worse than the problem. For instance, one Ionic Breeze owner interviewed by Consumer Reports claimed to have experienced a "dramatic reduction" in her asthma symptoms a mere two days after she turned off the device.

from Consumer Reports:
Quote:
However, not all air cleaners produce significant amount
s of ozone. The top-performing Friedrich C-90A, an
ionizing electrostatic precipitator model, is very effective and emits little ozone. Another fine performer that emits
little ozone is the Whirlpool 45030, which is a HEPA-filter model.

Greenhouse gasses are a non-issue. The real one is soil erosion which needs unsanitary conditions by our standards (unless you want animal poop and highly toxic fungal spores everywhere you step).

Oh I agree. personally i think recycling is good if only for the landfill, solid waste pollution issue. I'm just raising the question about whether or not these "air purifiers" make any sense from a net air pollution footprint standpoint. If the power required to operate releases more pollutants into the air then it cleans up, then these are just giant wastes of $$

This sounds a lot like an electrostatic precipitator - we use them on sulphur burning acid plants to pull particulates and acid mist out of the SO2 stream. They work really well at pulling particulates out of the gas stream, however they do use a bit of power to do so - in the 500kW region, excluding the fan, for ~100,000 Nm³/hr of contaminated gas. I would like to know what the expected net reduction in particulates is taking into account the power usage and method of power generation, particularly in China where they burn a lot of brown coal for power generation.

This is a good idea, however ultimately we need to address the pollution at the source, and fix the problem rather than treat the symptoms.
