[TweakTown] Valve isn't excited over DX12, but talks up the Vulkan API - Page 5

Wheather Vulcan is better or not, competition is very much needed. DirectX has been the dominating king for way too long, forcing Windows to be the real only option for PC gaming. Having something multiplatform, even if it only gets as popular as Linux based OSes themselves, is a leap in the right direction and undoubtedly benefits the consumer the greatest.

AM I on the only one that thinks Valve is less and less important as a game developer?

I know their place in the industry....but to me, this would be the equivalent of a BMW Engineer saying "I think Deer Park water is better tasting than Aquafina"

Just saying, since Half life 2 (and maybe Episode 2) they've made 2 games that were marginally unique. (L4D and Portal 1) Nothing since 2004 has remotely been pushed the graphics boundaries from Valve.

Now if this was Crytek saying something like this, it'd hold more water.

I think it is fair to say that Valve as a game developer is secondary to Steam at this point.

Vulkan's survival or crash all depends if the developers even bother to implement it at all.
It can be amazing but if no developer bothers with it, it might as well not exist.

Linux has come a long way but we are not there yet, we have years and years to go before Linux is ready for a true assault on Windows. There are too many distro's for game developers to code for and I am not going to recompile everything just because. We need one of them to stand out and become the defacto standard, which is what Windows has achieved. Until that day and the day everything can be installed by double clicking and not requiring the terminal Linux will be second rate to Windows and there is no way around it.

I tried to run Mint on my laptop but drivers are seriously problematic. There were lots of problems and I could not find a driver that worked with GPU switching. No matter how great it is and how loudly Linux lovers scream from the rooftops the majority will not (including myself) switch to Linux. I would love to replace Windows with Linux entirely but can't simply because lots of programs I use only run under Windows and I can't get them to run in Wine.

Valve are game developers? As far as I see it they only serve as middle ware DRM.

Yet Portal and L4D have been extremely popular franchises. Much like Call of Duty not pushing graphics boundaries, it's still hugely popular.

They're still a game developer. And they've been working on Source 2 Engine before releasing any new games. Seeing as the original Source Engine was released in like... 2003/2004? It's a much needed upgrade in... everything, including graphics. Source 2 is also going to be utilizing Vulkan, which is another push for it.

I also don't subscribe to the idea that graphics = everything, like most people here. Pushing graphics is nice, but not always needed. And definitely not a requirement. I'll take better game play and story lines over graphics any day.

Don't forget the sound track! Even mediocre games are remembered if their sound track was amazing. wink.gif

That's the beauty of Steam in Linux. Steam installs a common set of libraries so the developers make their games based on Steam's libraries and no matter what Distro you are using, the game will run. I have personally used Arch / Fedora / Ubuntu and no issues to report on playing games on them.

What type of laptop are you using? If it's an Nvidia based video card laptop I will gladly help you to get it setup. Not hard at all.

Sounds like people are mixing up microsofts terms from service to service. I'd assume the email reading is for outlook. It's not like other services would not do the same with your emails if they thought they had to.

This thread shouldn't be about MS spying or whatever anyways... Its about DX12 vs Vulcan and wanting more OS options for gaming be it Linux, Win7, Win10 or whatever more Vulcan will support. That is the real importance. This all is ofcourse if Vulcan will preform similar to DX12.

So even if your Pro windows or anti Linux or anti Valve you still benefit from supporting this.
