How effective is mouting fans to blow on card backplate?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am curious since I got holders that would allow me to install two additional 120mm fans that would blow on 980 Ti G1 backplate. I wonder how effective it would be in terms of cooling. Would it reduce temperature at all in card? I am not expecting some drastic temp drop, but do you think maybe 2-3 C would be possible?

I am curious what you think about it. Never saw fans cooling backplate but idea stroke me and I wonder what do you guys think smile.gif.

I think it would disrupt your case's normal air flow which in turn would probably make the overall system more hot.

Best ways to cool a GPU are:
a. Better cooler / paste that connects to the die directly.
b. Keep it clean.
c. Keep ambient (room) temperatures down.

"Never saw fans cooling backplate" - There is a reason why. It won't reduce temps in any meaningful way and will add noise, power, and air flow disruption.

I've seen guys do it with fans that blow across the back of the GPU at an angle so that the air still goes towards one of the exhaust fan areas. that way you can do it and still have decent airflow. Just think about it logically for routing hot air out and you'll be fine.
