[Anand] Fable Legends DX12 Benchmark Analysis - Page 16

It's exactly as I said. Now every time Nvidia is ahead of AMD in a DX12 game people will claim that the game was gimped on AMD cards because async compute this and Gameworks that. rolleyes.gif

People see DX12 as nothing but Async compute...

This is gonna be a bumpy ride.

90% of people don't overclock, have a look at all the streamers/YouTubers who own high-end cards, almost none of them overclock.

So the stock results is what most people will be getting. However, using that demographic to paint the Fury X in a better light is silly, and just shows an agenda, the people who don't overclock aren't getting the most out of their card. Overclocked results are completely valid imo, and anyone looking at the Ti vs the X should take overclocking into account. Unfortunately we still don't know what the Fury X is capable of overclocking wise, i can't believe it's taking this long to get voltage control..

You gotta feel for AMD a bit, they've built a monster GPU, that no one is taking advantage of. I think we can all agree that AMD has built a more forward-thinking architecture, and usually builds better hardware, but Nvidia time and time again has proved to be far better at business.

I'm looking forward to what the Frostbite engine will be doing, they've been very positive about AMD and DX12, and also quite negative about Gameworks and DX11. So if anyone will use a bit more of AMD's design, it will be them.

Haha, spot on observation thumb.gif

AMD fans gonna have a hard time starting next year when different game developers focus on different game optimizations for DX12. I can already hear it now "They didnt use async compute!! They are clearly in Nvidias pocket!!!" rolleyes.gif

This is the third engine test we had for DX12. In Oxide AMD took a lead. DX12 was praised to be the savior of AMD, nothing could stop them now. Then Unreal was tested in DX12, where Nvidia took a lead. AMD fans was quick to start spinning the story. So came Fable DX12 test again which gave Nvidia a lead yet again. "Broken benchmark!" according to the usual suspects again.

1/3 games AMD was doing better, rest Nvidia. The game where AMD did better was made by oxide which have a long established partnership with AMD and their twitter is filled with AMD this and AMD that ever since they was developing a game around Mantle.
If that doesnt atleast raise a small flag I dont know what...

If I'm not mistaken they are also using different nvidia drives. AT are using the qualified one, and TR are using the dev one?
Also since there will be more aftermarket versions fury x, I think it will always be a torn in AMD's arse when it comes to comparisons.

Err... I don't quite care for the green vs red piss fights but you have lots of wrong ideas. This is the 2nd DX12 benchmark... Fable DX12 is Unreal... UE4. It's a canned benchmark for the most part but I don't think anyone calls it broken.

Secondly, AMD is performing better overall. Frames are more consistent, mid range AMD cards are in the lead even at 1/2 the price of their Nvidia counterparts and in order to win the top end the 980 TI was overclocked by 40%. At the end of the day it doesn't matter IMO. The difference is performance is too minimal here from either green or red camp IMO. It just comes down to price between the 290/390/980.

This is a huge contradiction in just a few sentences.

If 90% of people don't overclock, than overlooked results are meaningless. It will actually cause more confusion as it people will go "well my card can do X fps according to site Y, why it doesn't do that??".

Stock is the best comparison for 90% of the same people you pointed out in the first place. Overclocked results can be added as a smaller segment (like most sites do anyway). But it is not the main thing.
If someone plans to buy the best aftermarket 980 TI or a fury X (which are only available in stock form), and he doesn't plan to OC, what does it matter to him if the fury X for example has a better potential once OCed? It is irrelevant to him. If the aftermarket 980 TI runs at faster clocks and performs better, it means he should buy that card.

.

So it's a canned benchmark? That makes it irrelevant? What about a pre-alpha-pre-drivers-benchmark which only concentrates on async? Is that ok? Why doesn't it makes that benchmark also irrelevant?

You are falling (intentionally or not) to the same age old traps.
The only thing that will matter, at all, is how released games with updated drivers for those games, perform. Not alpha, beta, gamma, pre, canned, artificial or what ever benchmark is being released before the release of the game.

One thing bothers me, if fable legends was developed by lionshead for microsoft it should have been optimized for the xbone and its APU and thats using lot more Async compute to taking advantage of the GCN part and its dx12 capabilities, why they only used about 5% of AC (less than 8n Aots ).
So if even microsoft who have to optimize their games to pull every drope of gpu power of their Xbone APU didn't use lot of AC for its first major dx12 game i am affaraid that it will be the case for the majority of game devs and that doesn't look good for AMD and for the custumers frown.gif
Can you please Mahigan give your toughts on mine that would be nice smile.gif
