Last CS:GO tournament (Cologne) had around 1.2 million viewers for the finals, worldwide (twitch and other media combined). E-sports is doing well, but i don't think 1.2 million worlwide during finals on a major tournament of a game is THAT good.

eSports is still fairly young in comparison.

The reason why broadcast networks are paying hundreds of millions is because Live athletic sports leagues/events are the only thing that is keeping cable, network broadcasts, and Dish/DirectTV alive right now to get people to tune in to their networks. If it were not for live action sports, people would rather stream or watch their TV shows online at their own convenient times.

Amazon did pay $1 Billion for Twitch btw,..

DOTA 2 and League of Legends gets tens of millions.

Last TI finals, if i'm not mistaken, had 4.5 million viewers watching worldwide. If it had been broadcasted on a cable channel (which is, usually, only available to a limited amount of countries and paying customers), the viewership would have been smaller. The same metrics can't be used for comparison. I think it's great that it's starting to get picked up by mainstream TV, but i think people exaggerate its actual popularity a bit.
