KRK Rokit 5 or Audioengine A5+ for a 2.1 set up?

So all I have for audio right now are my head phones. I simply can not stand wearing them anymore. Never been a big fan of headphones so I really need some speakers for my computer.

I use to have the Logitech Z5500 connected to my computer, really enjoyed those, but now I have them connected to my TV and there they will stay.

Since I was spoiled by the awesome bass that the Z5500 subwoofer provided I am looking for a real solid 2.1 setup for my computer. I will simply be using these speakers for 80% gaming and 20% listening to music. What is important to me is the boom from an explosion and the pop from a gun when I play my games.

The two options I have been looking at are either the KRK Rokit 5 with the 10s subwoofer or the Audio Engine A5+ with S8 sub.

I am worried about the KRK's being MONTIORS and not Hi Fi speakers like the Audio Engine. But, I keep reading how awesome the rokit 5's are which keep my interest.

I am leaning towards the Audio Engine's due to the fact they seem to be made more for what I will be using them for. However, I do not have a DAC. Instead I have a focusrite 2i2 which has balanced 1/4 trs out. There is no rca out on my focus rite 2i2 which the audio engines require : ( Making my decision that much more complicated.

Any suggestions on what I should do? If I decide on the audio engine's then what I will probably do is trade in my focusrite 2i2 for a focusrite solo which does have rca outs....

I'd buy the Audioengine A5+, don't buy the S8 sub straight away, the A5+'s have good bass, although not as good as my old A5's (non + version) I have my A5+'s paired with audioengines DAC but honestly I don't think it's that great, my old setup with A5's and ASUS Xonar essense ST sounded better and had more bass but this setup is still good, perhaps with the A5+, the D1 and the S8 sub it will be a well rounded kit. Otherwise if you can use the KRK Rokit 5 with your current setup just go that way I think.

Even without RCA out, you could use the Scarlett. Just need an appropriate TRS 1/4" to RCA cable. They're about $5 bucks on the budget end of things.

Wow, thanks for the quick response!

Ugh... I would really hate to have to spend the $170 on the D1 when I already have a focusrite 2i2. I am afraid to get the rokits since their main purpose is for producing music, but I could save $170 by not having to buy the D1...

I was thinking this too. I found this on amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Stereo-4-Inch-3-3-Feet-Return-Insert/dp/B000068O1J/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

I am thinking that would hook up my focusrite with the audi engines?

However, I would be using only ONE of these cables. If you look at the back panel of my focusrite in my first post you will see that I have balanced 1/4 trs outs.... one marked left and one marked right. Lol which one do I plug the trs>rca cable into? Does it matter? I don't want these damn speakers blowing up in my face lol.

The a5+ only has one rca in... the other speaker is not powered.

As an alternative to the KRK, you could check out the Behringer Nekkst K5 + K10S. Yes, they look the same as the KRK (including the name). But that's because the designer is the KRK founder.
But sadly the speakers are just too new so there aren't any reviews out yet frown.gif

As for the RCA problem:
Quote:
The Scarlett 2i2 has "impedance balanced" outputs, and it's fine to use a TS to RCA cable for that particular device. Using a TS plug to provide an unbalanced feed is fine on a Scarlett 2i2, or a transformer balanced output. In fact it's absolutely necessary on a transformer output to reference the transformer low side to ground.
So this kind of cable should do the job just fine. Even the manual states that the port accepts both balanced and unbalanced 1/4" jack plugs (page 13/15).

I think then this will be the route I go. Get the cables above and just keep fingers crossed they will work with A5+. I did see those TS to RCA cables before, but since I have TRS outs I thought I would not be able to use it. In fact I think I read somewhere in the question and answer segment on amazon that a TS cable can not be connected to a TRS out, because there is a difference. I guess the fact the focusrite 2i2 having a "impedance balanced" output makes it compatible.

I am just a bit worried to get any monitor set up. I keep reading how awesome many monitors sound, but then I keep reading their main purpose is for producing music and getting the most realistic/flat sound.

I do not plan on producing music at all. Instead I want to game and listen to music. How good a monitor will be for that? Idk... there isn't much info out there.

You really can't go wrong with the Yamahas, though, for the price. Don't be afraid that it's labeled a "monitor". Maybe you'll hear things you never knew were there. tongue.gif

I will say the Yamaha HS5 looks REAL sleek in the white, very nice indeed. IDK... I will have to do a little bit of research on them.

Like I said I am more interested in a amazing boom and bang sound rather than a flat/realistic sound. Some of the monitor set ups that I see people have on Youtube where they use it for listening to music many commenters will ask... "why would you blow your money on monitors just for listening to music, what a waste". Those kind of comments scare me away from monitors : /
