How can I win the dust war?!

Thread Starter
Dust is something that seems like it's been a constant, unending battle for years. I find myself thinking that they're has to be a better way.

Dust accumulation in my case, on fans and filter screens is such a pain. The coolmaster case I currently have thankfully included screen filters over the intake fans, but the accumulation of dust is a huge hassle because I can't even clean the filter screens without opening the case, unscrewing the drive bays and sliding them out enough to pull the screens. Even with the filters, there is just too much accumulation in the case to be acceptable. It really makes a nice case look like a mess. Moreover, even when they are vacuumed there is still an ever-growing layer of fine dust on all the fan blades. That layer is the worst of all, because it just will never vacuum off. It is as if the dust was caked on with glue or hairspray!

How do you manage that? How do you keep your fans and cases clean? For me it's particularly annoying because I can't really tolerate much downtime due to the '24x7 server' role of my machine, and the cleanup forces me to power everything down every time. It seems like it only takes a month before the filter screens are full of dust and need to be cleaned yet again.

Like most people, I don't have my rig running in a dust-free datacenter. It's running in my computer-room/office/personal star wars museum ;-)

Nevertheless, I use very high end 3M filtrette air filters in my home. I don't know what other measures I can take to win this dust war. Can you experts give me some advice?

What about fighting it at the source? What's causing the dust? Do you have animals? How often do you clear the room/the area around the PC?

You could filter out most of the dust by creating a bezel that would go over all of your cases intakes with a 3M furnace filter. That'll filter out a lot. On top of that, make sure your case has a positive pressure (more intake fans than exhaust) I always try to get a 2:1 ratio, 3:2 works too. Negative pressure is often a dust magnet that people neglect.

I'm sorry, I don't know what that is.

That's a good question, yes. I clean the room daily. It is a wood floor, so there isn't any carpet. The case sits up on a high desk which is also regularly cleaned. I have no pets, just kids ;-)

The positive pressure principle isn't something I've ever heard of. I'll research that more. Do you have any examples or pictures of the kind of bezel you mentioned? Again, that's something I've never seen.
