NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB = 970GTX?

Does anybody know how a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB rates against it's desktop counterparts?

I've heard a 980M is equivalent to a 970GTX is that true?

Thanks smile.gif

Not quite, a desktop 970 has 1664 shaders coupled with 3.5GB+0.5GB of slow RAM. The 980M has 1536 shaders with 8GB of full speed RAM. For comparison the 970 gets a score of ~10600 in Firestrike while the 980M gets 9741.

Not to mention there inst a maxwell desktop card with 1536 shaders so there really isn't a desktop equivalent thumb.gif

OK thanks for the information. 1+ REP for you sir!

I'm wondering will a 980M be able to play GTA5 or Star Wars Battlefront at decent FPS?

I'm looking at building a new Skylake rig but I found a laptop that is cheaper with a 980M.

I would like a 980GTX or 990M what ever they are calling it but not available yet in laptops.

A 980M is more than sufficient to play GTA V, my backup GTX 570 could do it at high with 2xAA and the 570 is about half as powerful as a 980m, I'm 99% sure Star Wars will run just fine.

The 980m is a gimped desktop 970.

[...although since the 980m has 64 ROPs to the 970's 56 and none of the 970's memory issues, maybe the desktop 970 is a gimped 980m. biggrin.gif ]

...but seriously, the 970 has and keeps the edge due to a huge memory bandwidth lead. 970 is 10-20% faster ...though some of that is also the 970 being helped by a faster desktop CPU. A 10% OC on the 980m can keep that difference closer to 10% [...or less] of the stock 970.

OK thanks guys!

I'm looking at this laptop:

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=416&products_id=33378&zenid=22c10ee59da89c88e5cc3c1ed30fbe90

Do you think that will be enough to play GTA5 and Star Wars Battlefront? I'm looking at a solid 60-70 FPS.

I would like the GTX980 or 990M what ever it's called but when it comes out it will more than likely cost a extra $1000.

Oh looks like that laptop says it has a "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB" does that mean it has the newer GPU? Or is it a typo?

$6300 here for the GT80 TITAN with 980M SLI frown.gif. I'm not spending $6300 on a laptop. $4000 I can justify if it has the new 980 GTX GPU.

Plus I don't think the GT80 TITAN has the new 980GTX GPU yet.

My new Skylake build will cost me at least $5500 AU anyway so $4000 for a laptop that can play GTA5/Star Wars Battlefront is a good buy.

the titan has 2 gtx980m in sli?
you can also get a titan with only 1 980m and can upgrade the card later

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=32376&cPath=1539

here is a titan from that site with 970m in SLI .

my personal opion is , if im going to make a purchase that great, i want the ability to atleast have 2 card slots . So i can upgrade even more when or if the time comes. lol

Well the TITAN has 2 x 980M in SLI. Don't think they have released a version with the 980GTX mobile GPU yet.

Australia has far less models than USA. We only have a 965M SLI version and the 980M SLI version.
