Introducing the WESK PC, a design exercise

Maybe this idea has already been done, but I think this idea has some specific differences than things I have seen. Point me to good examples if you know of any. I would do this with my rig listed in my sig

The problem: Wall PC's are awesome, but are usually open air and hard to move. Desk PC's are awesome, but hard to move and commit you to a desk.

The goal: a custom pc that can be wall mounted, sit flat on a desk, but be easily carried and moved.

The method: a flat case that has a solid back and a glass front that has a handle for carrying and easy wall removal.

So the real goal is making it as thin as possible for the desk application.
120mm is 4.75", 80mm is 3.2", Plexi should be at least 1/8" but probably 1/4", the back material most likely the same. Correct me if you know better.

When I say back I refer to the face that would be touching the wall or desk. the front is the plexi or glass.

Fans could be mounted on the exterior of the side, so with the total thickness being 4.75" then subtract 1/4" for backing and plexi leaves 4.25" inside for components. That seems thick. EDIT: 4" inside dimension is my minimum. The cpu rad and fans on one side is 2" alone. Then the motherboard will be below that so my ram sticks up about 1.5". I will use 80mm fans on edges.

The GPU would be mounted flat using a 16x pci extender. Not an issue. Hard drives also not an issue. Disc drive can go out the side. the disc drive and two hard drives plus an SSD all stacked makes nearly 4" thick. I will use Velcro to attach them to each other.

Similar builds-
http://www.slashgear.com/wall-mounted-six-pc-custom-render-farm-2617500/

http://hacknmod.com/hack/plexiglass-led-pc-table-mod/

Lian Li has one similar but 6" deep... I am looking to nearly cut that in half
http://www.eteknix.com/lian-li-shows-new-wall-mountable-open-air-prototypes/

Some general points of what I want this to be-
-easy to open front and swap parts
-easy to move for LAN parties
-Small as possible
-room for a second GPU (maybe), or any other upgrade (I think I am fine with never having a triple slot card) or more HDD, SSD (stacking?)
-strong front to support monitor in desk application

Update 2016-05-26
I have a more realistic idea of the thickness and I drew it at full scale. Next step is to lay out my components on the drawing and build the case out of cardboard.

compact design. not sure if I could ever get another card in here though unless it went over the pci slots

or even more compact, with IO on top

With this layout the GPU can have a wall on its right side, separating the heat and still having three sides to push air out of the case.

my sketches figuring things out

The Before case

the mat

When I remake these cables they will be much shorter

Did a benchmark in Tomb raider with the 30cm shielded riser from moddiy.com. maybe one frame loss but that is negligible. It is not as I thought it would be so I need to test it in the second mobo slot

Some sleeving things

Edit 2016-05-26
I am moving forward with the second option. I like the shape better and it will be easier to control GPU heat.

Edit 2016-06-06
I have all the parts out on the table to see how they fit so next is making it from cardboard

less than 6" deep would be possible. however, unless you plan to use a m-itx board, it will be massive in terms of length and width.
i actually had the exact same idea as you years ago, but to keep it at a small footprint, wall mountable, thin and as small as a mid tower size would be quite a challenge.
i gave up on making it as thin as possible since that would require having my massive video card and my PCI-E SSD mounted flat against the back panel which will increase the size of it by 40%.
your AIO cpu cooler would not be the problem, i could measure the depth of it from the board to the edge for you when i get home.

my suggestion to you would be to just take the design of the lian-li pc-07 and change it to match your goal.
the only thing you would have to do is get rid of the gap for cable management between the motherboard mounting backplate and the rear side panel.
you should probably also think of a way to route the cables in a way that keeps it aesthetically pleasing as you will be able to see every one of them through the glass.

I did a rough layout and found 24" x 24" to be a possibility with my components. "rough". Once I have the time I will upload pictures of possible layouts. I have two 3.5" hdd and one SSD right now, so I am thinking of stacking drives in one stack and SSD in another which would save some space.

For cable management I was thinking of tight black zip ties on the front face of the back panel if I could do it neatly next to the components. Or some kind of tube that looks nice or something.

do you have a forum thread from your previous endeavor I could learn from?

no useful thread unfortunately, and i threw away my original cardboard mock up with the measurements on it, sorry.
i do however remember it to be close to 24.5" x 19.5".
the component placement and orientation for the motherboard, PCI cards, and PSU are exactly the same as the lian li pc-07 with the exception of also placing the 240mm radiator below the PSU and the drives below the radiator in a stacking configuration.
basically how i mounted my radiator and SSD for my acrylic case (http://i.imgur.com/16XIKVc.jpg).
instead of having brackets suspending the radiator from the back panel, you could mount the radiator against the front glass panel, or back panel instead, and just drill holes for it to breathe through.
also had the same idea for cable management with just tying them against the back panel, routing them in straight lines and 90 degree bends to keep that professional look.

mmm, nice idea. So to support a monitor on top, when lying flat, i would suggest putting some support pieces in between the bottom and top (when in desk mode tongue.gif). In fact for the rest of my post, take the position as in desk mode rolleyes.gif
I think you can easily squeeze everything in and still have it looking good. I really like zhe1274,s pic for cable management. Will make it look waayy neater.
Clever placement is all it is going to take. If you dont go for a AIO, you can get 80mm fan radiators then you have basically the entire edge to play with when it comes to cooling because thats about your target height. You can then plan ahead and even add water cooling for the GPU. That will limit the height required for the GPU and the hot air inside the case.

Do you have a build log for that build? Looks great! I am liking the idea of some kind of shroud for cables to go inside. Then I don't care how straight they are inside the shroud.

Yea, besides the supports that go all the way through I want to have supports with black felt on them under the plexi so if there is load it will be fine.
I am actually not sure if I will even do AIO. I may have a bump up of mesh for my cpu cooler (which is NOT low profile) but I do not think a custom loop is feasible in the short term (the next year) but I will build the case so that replacing some of the sides with rads in the future could be an option.

sorry, but no build log was kept, only measurements of brackets and such since it was a simple build.
you will have to think about fan positioning if you plan on enclosing the case fully. since you will only be able mount 80mm fans vertically because of the height restriction, and lack of open air.
or just think about the air flow in general when using the case in all the orientations you want to, such as on the desktop with monitor resting on it.

you will have to think about fan positioning if you plan on enclosing the case fully. since you will only be able mount 80mm fans vertically because of the height restriction, and lack of open air.
or just think about the air flow in general when using the case in all the orientations you want to, such as on the desktop with monitor resting on it.

This is precisely why my layout is so important. Also in the OP the cross section with the bump up for fan intake. I have a 240mm fan shown in the pic in my sig. I am thinking of putting that over the storage drives because they are the lowest profile. I would use a tight metal mesh over them if I just had a hole in the plexi. Then the air would enter over the drives and exit one of the edges past the GPU and CPU.

I am also considering providing dedicated intake grille for GPU. I just wont also use the WESK as a coaster :-)

haha, you might end up having no choice but to place your drinks on the WESK depending on the size of your table and how much surface area the WESK takes up tongue.gif
or use a table with keyboard slide out tray, gotta love keyboard slide out trays!
