Maybe I integrate a coaster cheers.gif

What material did you use for that cable shroud in your profile pic? I could light up something like this (ill find one smaller and cheaper)-

I am trying to think of ways to get it more wide than tall. I dont want the mobo IO out the bottom for when it is in desk mode tho, so unless I put them out the top it is kind of stuck.

When in wall mode I don't care how much it sticks off the wall, so maybe it rotates so that mobo IO goes out the top and then behind the case in between the wall and the case. I could have a flat peice of something hiding the cables. i think I could stack an SSD, HDD, and disc drive (top to bottom) on each other.

BUT I have two hard drives... so maybe they would go on the bottom under the mobo. it would only grow to like 1' 2" or 1' 3" tall, which would still be a great size

I will resume design on this now that I have a break from school. It has been in the back of my mind and although I really like big sexy air coolers I cannot view having a bump up for one anything but a compromise in the design. Because I don't NEED a new cooler I can't justify spending a lot so I am looking at a refurbished Corsair H90 which only costs $50. People say that half the time these are purchased on Newegg they come new in the shrink wrap anyway. I don't think any other AIO can beat that price vs performance as it is a 140mm rad.

It really depends on the budget. Custom cases end up almost always costing a premium even if your own time is usually "free" in the project. If your budget allows it - SFF PSU is a bit smaller, Custom loop looks better (and performs a bit better) than AIO however, main advantage of custom loop is that you can easily add GPU in it as well - GPU's benefit a lot more from water cooling that CPU's. If you want a nice small air cooler then I like Big Shuriken with aftermarket 25mm thick fan for it (can be very quiet and still reasonably small). You could use a riser if you are content with only a single GPU for getting the main deparment flatter at the cost of increased surface area.

Now if you want also to go to LAN's with it then I'm not sure the wall PC is the best idea. Large surface area and relative thinness of the case would make it very hard to make it all sufficiently rigid for easy transportation. Especially if weight is of concern (which it portably is if it's mounted on wall or supposed to be carried around).

Cost
I barely have the budget for an AIO, and on top of that have never done a custom loop, so I am quite content saving that for a future upgrade. Thanks, I will look into that cooler.

GPU
I am researching risers. I will most likely need a shielded one and will be doing some experiments shielding it myself. Others have been unsuccessful using aluminum foil or plasti-dip but I plan on combining the two methods over and over until the riser cable is at least 3/16" thick. There is also aluminum tape that I will add with the foil and plasti. Worst case I buy a 300mm shielded one from ebay for $40. The GPU may end up over the lower PCI slots but I will get it as far down as I can.
I am planning on cutting a hole the size of my MSI twin frozr IV fans with a metal mesh grill for direct gpu intake.

Structure
I plan to rely 100% on the back board. All mounting will tie back to it and the front transparent material will have to be kinda strong but I plan on having pillars of support between it and the back often. I would rather it weigh a little extra if it allows the shape I want.

If it's basically just a back plate and "cover" then if you can find a nice sheet of aluminium somewhere it might work. For cover something like 2mm plexi might be relatively easy - just leaving the case basically open at the sides so everything would be in essence between two plates. For additional rigidness you could bolt/rivet couple of 90 degree corners to the back plate at few places. If you do not feel like beinding the material yourself (it's harder than it might seem at firt glance if the material is 2mm or thicker aluminum and you want to do it without being the whole sheet - just part of it at some reasonably tight radius). Steel is much cheaper and stronger but also substantially heavier at the same thickness.

I did not think about making the back metal. I had always thought it would be wood for the ease of making holes and I am more comfortable with it. I will consider it though. I wonder what would be lighter, thin metal or wood. Going metal would decrease the thickness though. I think 4" is my goal for overall maximum thickness. 3" clear of interior space is most likely doable.

GENERAL UPDATE
This thread is not dead, I have ideas rolling around in the back of my head. My goal is to start designing again after school is done in a couple weeks and start construction late summer or fall.

Thread Starter
I am starting to think about the logistics of mounting and cooling the GPU. I think there is one important thing to decide before anything else, and that is if I want to leave space for a second card or condemn myself to only having one card.

I prefer to just have one card and never go SLI or CFX but DX12 and the multidapter technology is the only thing making me second guess. It is up to the game devs to implement this technology or not.

What are your opinions? in 5 years will the Multidapter tech be backed into every game or fall by the side for only a few games?

I made a poll about it here-

why not just stack the 2nd GPU on top of the first one if you eventually do want to SLI?
basically the same idea you have with stacking SSD/HDDs on top of each other
