[EuroGamer] Sony: climate "not healthy" for PlayStation Vita successor

Yoshida was quizzed on Sony's plans for a gaming handheld during the Q&A portion of his just-finished EGX 2015 developer session.

The affable exec replied that he and the rest of his team had enjoyed working on Vita, but that the rise of smartphone gaming had created an unhealthy climate in which to launch a successor.

"That's a tough question," he replied when asked about a PlayStation Vita 2. "People have mobile phones and it's so easy to play games on smartphones," Yoshida said. "And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start.

"I myself am a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and we worked really hard on designing every aspect. Touch-based games are fun - there are many games with really good design. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.

"So I hope, like many of you, that this culture of playing portable games continues but the climate is not healthy for now because of the huge dominance of mobile gaming."

The PS Vita is a really nice console, but it didn't do so well up against the 3DS.

I'd personally rather play with sticks and buttons. I don't care for phones or games on them. I'm sure many people would prefer a hand held gaming system over a phone with games as an afterthought.

I sold my Vita Slim 2 weeks ago. I kind of knew that there's no future in it. Especially for the games I want it to be on. I mean the console is pretty powerful, but its sad that its will never be used up to its potential.

The majority of phone/mobile "games" are not games IMO. The "games" in the app store are the same garbage those 40yr old women play on Yahoo games to relieve boredom.

Touch screen controls are even worse than motion controls.

GTA3, KOTOR, Baldur's Gate. 3 great games sold on phones, but play like crap due to the interface.

Analog sticks & buttons or go home!

Maybe if the Vita had better software and apps it wouldn't have failed so hard.

3DS has no problem competing with phones/tablets in terms of gaming.

Plus forcing Sony Branded memory cards on people.

The way I see it is most handhelds are great for kids and younger audiences who have free time away from home.

Personally, now that im an adult and have responsibilities, I find i have very little time outside my home to dedicate to gaming. Thats why these mobile games thrive since you can pick up and play for 2-3 minutes at a time when your waiting in line or on a break, instead of having to devote extra time for a better experience.

I really like handhelds and what they bring to the table, but its a hard market to succeed in.

Not surprising since they abandoned AAA game support for the Vita. No one's going to buy into a new system now when they abandoned their old one so quickly. If the market was there now for it, the Vita would still be going strong.

So make a Vita that takes phone calls.

Grrrr! Everyone constantly says "Smartphones are too much competition" when I would abandon Android for a gaming focused device that takes phone calls in a heartbeat, if only the option was given to me.

Sony of all people should be able to make a phone with thumbsticks and that just runs a highly compacted Android utility in the background. Or forget Android and make a phone client for XMB.

Making a handheld gaming device more like a smart phone makes complete sense. The apps are indeed where it is at. I know that since the PSP rev. 1, people have been trying to tell Sony this. For some unfathomable reason, Sony distinctly does not want to make their handheld gaming systems into a successful product. They seem to shun the avenues that would both sell more devices and result in more profit (monetizing apps on top of games and the mobile console).

I am sad to see the end, even briefly, of Sony mobile gaming devices. They were always solid, well built, and ergonomic. Their games often had a rating that wasn't G. It didn't have to rely on gimmicks, unlike the 3DS which seems to live off of gimmicks. But I feel no sympathy for Sony. They made this bed contrary to the wishes of their client base. Now that they have lit the bed on fire, they can lay down on it.

They did.

The Xperia Play.

It released in 2011.

I wonder why they didn't make a successor to it?

Update: Apparently the sales weren't to great.
