System is coming along nicely though! thumb.gif

im pretty excited to start and do something that I love for work everyday instead of something that makes me hate myself more and more with everyday that passes.

ALSO
Small bit of info, I had an extra 92x25mm noctua laying around and decided to start playing with software, the fan has yet to go over 900rpm, and the CPU has stayed under 55c.

so much winning.

I decided that 16GB Host datastore wasn't enough for what I was looking to do (Store OS ISO's and have plenty of room for auto snapshots)

So I picked up the SuperDOM 64GB model!

Were you planning on using the snapshots for backups? Or you just plan on doing changing around the VMs around? Snapshots aren't a great backup solution.

I've been told by ESXi professionals that Veeam is a very good solution.
https://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solution-free.html

EDIT: It requires the vStorage APIs. So it won't work w/ the free version of ESXi.

What a time starting new job and moving and all that jazz..

the build really hasnt done much lately just been sitting around collecting dust, being that I have no time to work on it.

I picked up a cyberpower UPS, and the first one had coil whine, returned it and got another and the second has much less whine but still more than I am okay with.. so i need to decided if I want to ship it back or just deal with it..

I will be getting a few more pictures after I move this weekend and will start to get the final cables done and then move on to doing all of the software stuff.

Is there a performance hit from using those hard drive cages? I'd want to say it shouldn't but more than a few people have complained that the adapters and boards from hard drive cages rob bandwidth. Do you recommend the cages you used?

These hotswap are used in some of the best servers around the planet, no there is no difference in speed. The backplane passes thru a signal with no degradation.
If you are using the same case as me and are using two bays (6x 5.25) then I wouldn't use this case because of modding that is required

Oops, too late. smile.gif

I've been following this thread for a while, and am using it as a template for my own build. Many thanks for all the great information and pics! You've certainly done your homework.

My CaseLabs Nova X2M arrived today (woo!) so I can't wait to get home and check it out. It'll be my first CaseLabs case, and I'm excited to see my build come together.

I have not ordered the two Supermicro drive enclosures yet, but have every intention to do so--have to spread those purchases out a little to let the bank account cool off, right?

If you have time, could you please give a little detail on what needs to be modded to fit two of the Supermicro cages in the X2M? I assume both follow industry specs in terms of clearances and tolerances; is there some sort of issue stacking the two cages on top of one another? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Again, many thanks for both inspiration and a very real blueprint for a combination VMWare host and FreeNAS box. Keep up the great work!

i have the same cage in my server and had to use a small hamer to bend some tabs back to slide the cage in the drive bays as there is no recces for them. the tabs are for when installing a single dvd drive the drive would rest on it and you can screw them in. with the drive cage being a smooth flat surface they interfere with each other.

I noticed that in my own research, yeah--several drive cage offerings have slots in the side of the cages to allow for those 5.25" bay tabs.

From what I can tell, the CaseLabs bay brackets are just flat aluminum--they don't have any sort of tab to interfere with the drive cage.

NKrader posted pics on the first page of the drive cages mounted in the case, so I'm guessing that they physically fit. Maybe there's an interference issue with the front faceplate/bezel? I'm comfortable with modding and such (I'll be making and sleeving custom cables for my build), but if the Supermicro cages require too much work to fit, maybe there's a better alternative? I'd love to stick with Supermicro if possible, so if the required modding isn't too bad, I'll definitely buy those.
