Depending on whether you are talking about AHCI vs NVME, and depending on the storage capacity, SM951 is faster on paper than Intel 750 for many tasks (probably for most tasks the average user on this board would encounter), but I believe the Intel 750 is actually faster in certain specific scenarios.

I would say IOPS...you can find explanations on the net..that's why I went with the 750, that and the protection. benching and crashing corrupts the OS like a champ... http://www.basvankaam.com/2014/07/29/the-ultimate-iops-cheat-sheet/

Loved it so much that I bought 2, then, my senses kicked in and I am going to return one for 2 480gb 730's. 2 of the 750's didn't make sense in my situation. the OS on it will only be used for gaming/benching. I will RAID0 the 730's for my music/audio producing software/video/photoshop, extra OS. I have a BUNCH of plugins...I will be jumping on the 750 800gb though and put the 400gb 750 in my other build..which won't be finished for about another month..

this makes so much more sense, RAID0 two budget high-capacity SSDs for general purpose storage is much better and much more cost effective than one expensive high-capacity SSD.

atm, i plan on getting one more SSD, a 128GB for OS only, and move all my apps and games on my current Crucial M4.
the OS by itself rarely exceeds 80GB so it won't get full easily, while i can fit much more things with the freed up space on the M4.

Lots of benchmark reviews coming out all at the same time today. Samsung must have embargoed their release.

It looks like Samsung 950 Pro is faster at many tasks, but the Intel still has a few advantages in certain testing scenarios.

For some reason, Amazon.com lists the Samsung 950 Pro as being available October 29, but Newegg lists availability as December 1. thinking.gif

Nothing against Samsung (actually just picked up an 850 Pro 1GB for my general storage needs) but I picked Intel 750 over the 951 - or waiting for the 950 Pro - because of the PCIE slot implementation with a nice spreader vs. the M2 slot. I did consider the Kingston that just puts the M2 in a riser...but then caught a nice sale at Newegg on the Intel.

Haven't built yet so I'm sure price has dropped again since my purchase but oh well.

Thermals better hopefully means overall reliability is a little better and the chance of throttling is lower. And if the Mobo I'm using has the slot (and the CPU has the lanes among graphics card scenarios of choice) why not use them. Physical size in a desktop is immaterial to me so long as it actually fits.

[Side dumb question for others already using NVME PCIE for their boot and OS drive, since I haven't built yet...anything 'special' need to be done for system backups? If I use a typical OS sector imaging program to a backup HDD for example, am I asking for trouble? Some of that SSD vs. HDD cluster alignment type mess?

My only past experience is having moved my OS from an old Intel ~40GB to a Corsair 240GB-ish drive a year or so ago on my past build, but those are both on SATA and the system is old enough I wouldn't notice a little slowdown because I did something wrong.]
