If they found life, would it be Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict?

I think that's Scotland, not Mars.

I for one think the news is pretty big. Finding water in liquid form means theres a very good chance there is microbial life on Mars presently.

Ignore the plebs, good job NASA.thumb.gif

Possible but doesn't seem conducive for the emergence of life. As far as we know, organic molecules developed over significant periods of time in certain conditions. Small bodies of mineral dense water condensing for a short period of time probably isn't the right conditions for anything interesting to happen.

If life did exist on mars though, we might be able to find fossils. Even organic molecules would be evidence of, if not life, molecular evolution towards life.

Well when I say a good chance I should stipulate that means anything greater than .001%.

The fact that there is liquid water on Mars means that chance is very high as anywhere on Earth we find water in liquid form there seems to be life. There are single celled organisms that can survive in suspended animation for decades in the ice in Antarctica, and organisms that have been able to survive space for several years. If Mars were a more habitable world at one time and if there is still liquid water on it, theres a good bet there is still simple organisms lurking around nearby.

Organic matter has already been found on Mars. Organic material exists regardless of life.
