Torn between 970m and 980m.. need help!

The 6820HK line has finally launched and I am eager to place an order for one. Really thinking Sager.. However, with the new line the cost has gone up and my $1500 is really not possible.. Looking closet to $1650+ depending on the config.. Torn between the NP8657 and NP8658.

Option 1) NP8657 off of Sager with the 6820HK, IPS G-Sync, 30 Day Pixel Guarantee, IC Tim, Win 10 and 970m for $1,614.00 (swap out the 1tb hdd for a spare 256gb ssd I have and keep 8gb of ram until prices drop).

Option2) NP8658 off of XoticPC with the 6820HK, IPS G-Sync, 30 Day Pixel Guarantee, IC Tim, and 980m for $1,844.00 (Swap out for SSD and install a copy of Win7 I have)

Cost difference of $230 and a copy of Win10.. Not sure what to do as I wanted to stay closer to $1500.. How much longer will the 30% performance increase of the 980m really get me before I need to replace the whole laptop again?

Only difference being the 970m vs 980m? I'd spend the difference and know you have the best the current generation has to offer. If you're hardcore gamer, it should last you 2.5-3 years, at that point the advances in mobile GPU and CPU will be far enough ahead that your laptop is going to lag on the latest titles of the time.

That being said, I'm still cooking along with an ASUS G750JX that has 770m and 4700HQ -- and I think it's more than capable for anything I play. No desires to upgrade yet after 2 years.

Now i am looking into the 6700HQ ans 6820HK to see if there is a significant difference

With my luck id get the 980m and something would crap out on me before it gave out haha.

considering the fact im still not CPU bottlenecked in most games, im not too worried about having the latest CPU as I am having a better GPU

Yea, I looked into it a bit more and agree.. Reviews are saying the 5700HQ are actually better than the 6700HQ, but the 6700HQ is more efficient which will give better battery life under normal use (non gaming). I guess it's a worth it trade off.

Just asking myself if the 980m is worth the extra $300.. My fiancee keeps telling me to just buy the damn thing and stop obsessing haha. wink.gif
But since they are back ordered till Oct. 8th.. I see no reason to push the button so soon.

I'm in the same position as you are mate. I would spend extra and get the 980M. CPU is up to you but I would want the latest a 6820HK.

I would personally wait until the GTX 980 mobile GPU comes out as it's close to a desktop 980GTX but off course it will cost more.

Does the laptop use MXM GPU cards so you can upgrade the GPU in the future?

Just get the 980m and call it a day, its well worth it if its soldered, where upgrading means volt mods or complete system replacements

If it was an MXM system, it would be a different discussion.

Yea I think I will skip the 6820K as it adds another $120 which kills my budget.. I think I will go with the 980m.
Debating if I need the extended warranty right now.. But I doubt something will fail and if it does it probably will be within the first year (fingers crossed) or with my luck the day after any warranty is up haha.. Decided to skip the WIn10 upgrade and stick to the spare Win7 copy I have tongue.gif That would free up the $80 for a second year warranty.. Or the future purchase of the Win10 copy.. Not sure..

Other than that no one sees a reason not to snag one now right?

FWIW I have a 970m and literally everything I've thrown at it gets 60fps on ultra with 16x MSAA except the witcher 3, which still gets a playable 30-40fps. The 970m can be overclocked by 135mhz and the ram can be OCed by 405mhz and it run stable for a 15% avg boost in FPS and practically no change in temps. Depends on the laptops cooling system obviously but the highest I've ever gotten it to go was like 79c overclocked, which is well within range. I also have a 5700hq, it's probably more power then you need and at 100% load it does get pretty warm. Even BF4 doesn't end up using more then 30-40% load.

You can overclock past the limit of 135 on the core, that is an artificial limit.
