What is the metal ring on the pci-e power cord for?

Thread Starter
Im doing some sleeving on an original pci-e cord from an AX1200 (not i) power supply. I cut off the shrink wrap and there is this metal ring. It is not attached and you can spin it around. What does it do? Should i put it back on after im done sleeving? EDIT: Was just thinking, when you buy a sleeved set of cables from Corsair they do not have the ring on them.

For some reason it reminds me of a RF choke.

That's because it is.

The OP would probably be OK if it was left off but I would leave it on if possible. It would look better if it was just slipped over the sleeving and just secured with superglue instead of covered with a heat shrink sleeve.

That is a ferrite core. It helps to stabilize spurious RF noise and maintain a cleaner, AC noise free, cable path. You will find these coils on Video wires, Power wires, Data communication wires. Cheaper cables may not have them, higher performance cables usually do. The Ferrite core will be on the "destination" end of a cable.

Thx everyone. I left it off as it would not fit around all the sleeved wires. I was looking at the corsair sleeved wire kits and they do not have those ferrite cores on them. I wonder what the difference is between stock and their own aftermarket ones.

They used to put those things on game controllers.

http://www.yellowbulldog.co.uk/ps2/ps2-dualshock-2-controller-%28black%29-%28faulty%29.html

On the end of the cable, near the plug that goes into the PS2, there's a little plastic thing and inside it is a ferrite core.

I can't think of many other controllers for other systems (I have over 20) that have them, though.
