Hard to get myself to play single player games.

I do have a bunch going on in my "adult" life but even when I do have some free time I cannot mentally get myself to play most single player games, even ones I really want to play. I feel like I never have enough time to actually be focused, and I typically like to be extremely focused on the games I play to maximize the enjoyment.

Certain games have the right amount of appeal at the time to override this, however I wouldn't say it's because I actually always want to play those games more than the ones I'm not playing.

For those of you who have a lot going on in your life, is there any tips for getting yourself mentally into the mood to play a game?

It has nothing to do with losing interest, believe me I absolutely love single player games.


Also on that note watching movies is becoming harder, and reading books nearly impossible.

I remember this... It's not happening to me now, but I remember when it did.

 

You may need to write down your entire schedule, including when you know or believe you'll have free time each day so that you know exactly when you can be at complete ease and when you shouldn't be. You may also need to have an ongoing To-Do List so that you know when you're all caught up and you can play.

 

I think the feeling of never having enough time may just come from not knowing exactly how much free time you really have each and every day.

This is absolutely baseless and not backed by any proof, but I think that people need more time to just think about stuff. People always ask me how I'm so low stress... Tbh it's because when I'm not busy and I'm alone, most of that time I'm actually not doing anything lol. I just will sit/lay and just think about stuff... let my mind wander.

Sometimes I fill that time with entertainment like playing video games, watching movies etc... but after a while I get bored and find myself staring at the screen just thinking about things. It sounds kind of depressing lol, but it isn't really; besides, I also feel that a few dark days are actually good to have amongst all the good ones. thumb.gif

I forgot to put a point in the end of this lol. The boredom for me comes in cycles with all of the entertainment... eventually it will come back. Just don't put pressure on yourself to consume it.

What you're talking about is actually just meditation, believe it or not. Everyone needs to do this (everyone needs to meditate) every single day because it gives your mind time to process everything that still needs to be processed. I've found that most people don't realize that meditation is exactly what you just described: sitting or laying and just letting your mind wander.

 

Edit: I find that it's best to eliminate all possible distractions while meditating because it's a little bit like sleeping, but you're awake the whole time. So, it can be good to have enough white noise going to mask other sounds that might distract you. I'm talking about sounds that might prevent your mind from wandering freely.

I didn't know that it's meditation until I went looking for instructions on how to meditate. While many sources make it seem complicated and difficult, others say that it's a completely natural thing to do and that most of us do it anyway without even realizing it.

So, I'm going to just chill for a while and maybe attempt to take a nap in my chair. :) Even if I don't actually fall asleep, I know I'll feel better after 10-20 minutes.

 

I might even go do some mindless task that doesn't require much brainpower at all to accomplish. Y'know what I mean? Like, I have a few things to go do that I've done a million times and I can just let my mind wander while I do them.

Yep, that's exactly how I feel when I hit the wall playing games. Also, I know exactly what you mean; cleaning, cooking, laundry, walking, going to the bathroom (lmao) etc.

OP, like twocables said in his first quote, figure out just how much time you actually have rather than feeling overwhelmed, and in those moments of free time just relax and let your mind do what it wants. The urge to play games will come and go, just don't force yourself to play otherwise you will really burn out.

The busier I am the more I appreciate single-player games, actually. I think TwoCables gave great advice on how to administer time and see where you may find an opening to do some keyboard meditation.
