I recently purchased an Asus Sabertooth X99 which should arrive tomorrow, however I'm a little worried about the random 1.8v CPU murdering reboot issue. So, I'm considering returning it for an MSI board. (Note, I have purchased the Intel tuning protection plan).

Here's what I need to use:
  1. A 5820K processor
  2. A Noctua NH-D15 cooler
  3. A single GTX 980 or 980 Ti or equivalent video card
  4. A x4 PCI-E card for Thunderbolt
  5. A x1 PCI-E firewire card or sound card
  6. A M.2 SSD (preferably using 4 PCI-E 3.0 lanes)
  7. Must include USB 3.1
  8. Must be ATX

The Asus Sabertooth X99, MSI X99A MPower, and MSI X99A Gaming 7 seem to fit my needs once you take into account NH-D15 compatibility, and juggling the PCI-E lanes. But, I'm stuck between keeping the Sabertooth and hoping for the best, or going with one of the two MSI boards.

What are your opinions and recommendations?

In depth considerations: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Note, chances are I will only ever have 1 video card, however I may change my opinion down the road, who knows.

Asus Board:

Single Graphics Arrangement
X16 - Graphics
-
X1/2 - Sound card or FireWire
X16 - Thunderbolt in x4 mode
X1 - Sound card or Firewire
X16 - Disabled for M.2 SSD

Dual Graphics
X16 - Graphics
-
X1/2 - Sound card or Firewire
X16 - Graphics (x8)
X1 - xxx
X16 - M.2 SSD OR x4 Thunderbolt.

Triple graphics (AMD ONLY)
X16 - Graphics
-
X1/2 - Sound Card or Firewire
X16 - Graphics (x8)
X1 - xxx
X16 - Graphics (x4)
NO M.2 SSD can be installed.

Features:
- Backplate to prevent flex (from NH-D15 and cards)
- 11 fan headers
- Dust covers on everything
- 2 Network ports
- Can use M.2, Thunderbolt, Sound card, and firewire cards at the same time.
- Can still use a x1 card w/ dual graphics.

CONS:
- ***Overvolt issue*** (The severity of this problem can't be overstated)
- No 2666 RAM multiplier (2400 should be fine, but it's annoying)
- 40mm fan gets noisy fast. Noctua replacement?

MSI Board:

X16 - Graphics
X1 - xxx
X16 - Thunderbolt in x4 mode
X1 - Firewire or sound card
X16 - out of lanes
X16 - out of lanes
(m.2 SSD installed)

Dual Graphics
X16 - Graphics
X1 - xxx
X16 - Graphics (x8)
X1 - xxx
X16 - out of lanes
X16 - out of lanes
(M.2 SSD installed)

Triple graphics
X16 - Graphics (x8)
X1 - xxx
X16 - Graphics (x8)
X1 - xxx
X16 - Graphics (x8)
X16 - xxx (out of lanes and blocked)
(M.2 ssd installed)

Features:
- Voltage contacts for multimeter
- Triple SLI & Crossfire
- Supports 2666 RAM
- Can switch the m.2 slot to PCH to free up extra CPU lanes, but this forces the M.2 to PCI-E 2.0 (16Gbps, not 32Gbps)

Cons:
- One 1 NIC (and no free slots if it dies)
- Lose a PCI-E slot for add-ons
- Only 5 fan headers (will have to split CPU, Top, and Front fan headers).

I can't really comment on the sabertooth issue, but I love my Mpower. Dont get the Gaming 7, it has Killer Ethernet.

What's wrong with the Killer NIC? I haven't heard much about them.

Generally not as reliable as Intel Gigabit. You know, the usual "GAMING" junk.
