Need help/advice for my first custom loop setup - Page 2

Both of the kits you linked are fine tbh, they just always supply crappy tubing that will break down over time (I've personally only found one brand of soft tubing that doesn't).

As Bundy has suggested, a 240 would be fine for CPU only, if you ever planned on doing a GPU as well, a 360 would be a better option (The reason I suggested the Predator is its very easy to add a block onto the loop with the quick disconnects, and it comes with high quality tubing).

Out of what he suggested I would go with the Phobya, they just use re-branded Alphacool rads, those fans probably wont be as nice as the re-branded E-Loops that Alphacool supply in their kit, but the tube reservoir more than makes up for that (Bay res's can be a total pain in the ass to fill and bleed).

One other thing, isn't FrozenCPU no longer functioning (yet again) according to something that was posted just days ago? (Someone else mite be able to chime in on this).

It was the EK L360 kit I almost went with. I would also probably go for the phobya out of those listed but personal preference rather than based on any experience. Choosing it all yourself obviously gives a bit more flexibility. If you're only cooling the CPU then if you're going from a 240 AIO I'm not sure you will see significant gains but that doens't mean you shouldn't go for it if you want to of course.

You asked what I used so see list below, there are pics etc as per link below.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1539537/first-time-water-cool-external-rad-mitx-case#post_23499453

Pump – alphacool dc-lt combo with pump/top/res, 335RMB
CPU Block – raystorm, 350RMB
Rad – alphacool 360 st30, 302RMB
Tube – masterkleer 10/13mm, 30RMB
Fittings – barrow compression (including, 4x90 degrees and 2x45 degrees), 300RMB total
Coolant – distilled water plus XSPC concentrate ECX clear, 58RMB
Fans – enermax twister pressure, 60RMB each

GPU Block – alphacool GPX, 600RMB
Quick disconnects - barrow, 310RMB

Prices are for China (divide by 10 for pounds) so obviously may vary where you are. The pump is quite loud at full speed but otherwise not had any issues (and all works fine with pump speed turned down anyway).

Good luck and enjoy!

Just the CPU.

You could actually get away with a 120 kit especially if you can do push pull on the rad. I started with an EKL120 and decreased my CPU temps by over 30c. If you get a 240 you won't have any issues at all. Remember the great thing about kits is you can add, change, and expand anytime. IMO XSPC and EK make the best kits.

Thanks everyone for all of your responses and advice. It's helped me alot and needless to say, I caught the watercooling bug... so I'm gonna go for it. I've narrowed my choices down to two kits:

I have a two questions regarding the EKWB LK-240 kit and then I can make my final decision; 1) the LK-240 seems to have a awfully small reservoir. Does that hold enough liquid to cool an overclocked CPU? 2) Can I upgrade to a larger tube reservoir? Like this one http://www.altex.com/EKWB-EK-RES-X3-250mm-Reservoir-EK-RESX3-250-P156666.aspx

Again, I'd like to say thanks for all the feedback.

The size of the reservoir has no bearing on the cooling capacity, it is just for ease of filling/bleeding and ascetics. Yes you can upgrade that res to a larger tube, but you can just buy the tube itself from EK, you don't need the bottom or top like the one you linked.

So, I've decided to go with the Phobya kit everyone. Again many many thanks for all of the helpful responses and advice. One last thing; Can I get a recommendation for tubing please? I tried finding the rubber tubing that EKWB uses, but they don't even have it on their website; so I'd like to get some decent tubing that won't plasticize.

Thanks again.

UPDATE:

I decided to go all out and choose the individual parts for my setup. Would guys mind telling me what you think of the following parts list, please? Thanks in advance..

  1. (8) XSPC G1/4" to 1/2" ID, 3/4" OD Compression Fitting - Chrome Finish
  2. Phobya Balancer - 150mm - Black Nickel
  3. Phobya DC12-260 12Volt Pump
  4. XSPC EX360 Crossflow Series Copper Triple-Fan Radiator
  5. Koolance CPU-380I Water Block (Intel Processor)
  6. Masterkleer Tubing PVC 19/13mm (1/2"ID) UV-reactive Dark Red 3,3m
  7. (3) Yate Loon 120mm Medium Speed Silent Case Fan - D12SM-12 - Sleeved ( I might change these to the eLoops from Alphacool or some Gentle Typhoons )

Thanks everyone!

the phobya pump I would switch out for a D5 by someone I like swiftech models
the koolance CPU block I would switch out for one made by XSPC, swiftech, bitspower, or alphacomputers CPU block

other than that it looks fine, this is my opinion.
I like koolance as a company, they make some of the best accessories for water cooling, but there blocks, rads, and reservoirs, leave me with a bad taste in my mouth.
there are things that I would buy for Phobya, like a T fitting or a bubble down, as theses things are hard to mess up, but a pump, I would not buy from them, as I do not trust there manufacturing of such products.
