Need a new (used) laptop

Thread Starter
So someone lifted my T420 from my car. Time for a new laptop I guess.

What is your maximum budget? $500, can probably stretch another hundred or so if necessary. Also fine with picking up other parts here and there.

What country are you in? USA

What will be the uses of this laptop? Work (network engineer) on site, heavy multitasking, Linux server management, occasional super light gaming

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? I won't touch a Lenovo past Ivy, and only specific lines past Sandy. Also almost no consumer lines.

What screen size do you require? 15.6" MAX, preferably 14 or under.

What screen resolution do you require? 1600x900 minimum

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? Used/refurb preferred

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) A couple of hours. No need for anything very good.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings? Very minimal if anything, needs to be able to handle heavy multitasking and VM's though.

What operating system do you need? (if any) None, Fedora is free.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.) Not a W95 brick, not a ultrabook with zero ports.

How much hard drive space do you need? Whatever is fine. If it doesn't come with an SSD I'll be replacing it with a 120gb+ one before I use it.

Do you need any special hardware? (bluray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.) Need at least 3 USB, ethernet, digital display out. Must have a great keyboard. Build quality and ease of disassembly a priority too.

Is there anything else we need to know? Needs to have good Linux compatibility. I can handle most issues on my own, but staying away from Broadcom would be nice. Basically I just need a solid Linux laptop that I can have several browsers, minicom, ssh sessions, and a VM up all at once. A minimal GPU would be nice if it's got Sandy integrated or below.

Thanks for any help! I'd get another T420 but the HD3000 was getting a little long in the tooth for pushing 2 other monitors with a lot going on. Need to make a purchase sooner than later because it's not great for me to not have a laptop.

Try looking for an m4600

IF you find one on the cheap then you can upgrade the GPU a bit to the m5950 (6770m) which is the best gaming GPU under the old standard. Luckily for you its cheap.

I was looking at the M4600. What about this one specifically? I think I can shift around the funds to get it before the time ends.

It seems like a pretty good laptop. The CPU is a bit old by today's standards, but honestly for what you want it, it's a great bang for the buck.

Its not the biggest deal if it's a full quad. I really don't do much that's CPU intensive at the moment. But if you think I could get a full quad by picking up a barebones quad and adding to it from parts off eBay and here I'd rather that.

I mean, it depends on your budget. Here's a link with some deals on eBay that may interest you. However, most are auctions and you'll have to be on the lookout/hunting for them.

You could buy something like this, load it up with 16GB of RAM, a decent 250GB SSD and call it a day, perhaps. Only constraint would be the weak GPU, but if that's not a concern to you, the HP option is cheaper by $50USD.

Up to you.

GPU isnt stellar but much better than the Intel HD 3000

Quad i7, 8GB RAM, and 500GB HDD

scratch that, bad screen. but you can likely find something similar

How are the Quadro/Firepro's in Linux? I've honestly never used a system with one outside of a Windows environment.

If it was something new, I might be concerned. However this stuff has been been out for some time now, I would surprised if they still arent supported.

With that being said, I have no idea how well they cope with alternative distro's

I know that AMD is better with open source for a time, and Linus hated nvidia, but at present Im not sure which is "better".
