Multi-threading/Multi-core in games

I've hear a lot of people say most games except for some MMORPGS or online FPS don't really take advantage of multiple cores/threads. Out of curiosity, i enabled viewing the usage or each thread on my hyperthreaded core i7 with 4 cores/8 threads and to my surprise, practically every game I've run multithreads just fine, they're definitely not stuck on 1-2 threads. If this is the case, why do so many people say that most games are not coded to use multiple threads or cores? I believe windows itself is the one doling out responsibility amongst the threads and cores, not the games.

That is actually quite the opposite most mmorpgs don't take advantage of multi threading past 2-3 cores and almost all other modern games do.

Well a good way to check would be to run MSI Afterburner in your games, and also sites like gamegpu which show the performance difference with many CPUs. You will see that most games really don't have good multithreading or multi-core usage. Only a handful do. These days I use MSI Afterburner in every game to see what the CPU usage is like. So many put like 85% load on one core only. I think the only ones I've seen load up all 8 of my threads almost evenly are Alien: Isolation and Metro Redux, but then again I haven't checked Crysis 3 or Dragon Age: Inquisition which probably do the same.

Most new games use multiple cores. BF4, GTAV, and PCars are a few off the top of my head that use all 8 threads.

Older games like Fallout, Skyrim, and STALKER are crippled by only using one core however.

are you sure it was the game thread? could of been graphics usage

How?
Enable the osd and download HWinfo. Google it because you will probably need some instruction on how to get HWinfo 64 to show up in msi afterburners overlay.

I've seen skyrim and fallout using 2 threads, they use hardly any cpu though anyways so they're not really "crippled". Both run great on ultra on an AMD a8 APU that automatically lowers the clock speed to 1.27ghz to OC the IGPU and stay within TDP with no problems at all lol.

It distributes the workload pretty oddly, even when either game is CPU bound they are using <15% CPU on my i7. The lack of proper multithreading is really apparent when the games are modded; the old engine has real trouble with lots of draw calls and triangles on screen, and one core will be pegged to 100% while the game is running at 30fps and my other 7 threads and video cards are sitting by doing nothing.
