Nice writeup mllrkllr! It sounds like you put a lot of time and effort into testing Aquamark. Hopefully you can find a quad core platform with DDR3 to use for it!

My plan is to sell off all my 1366 hardware and get a 4770K since they seem to be dropping fast as skylake is so cheap. The X5667 does bench at 4.9 with AIO and 5.5 cold, but those ram speeds just kill the score.

I couldn't tell you anything about how timings effect cores, sorry. The timing tests were done with G3258, Z97OCF, and Sammy TridentX 2400 CL9. With the ram clocked to 2800 going from 11-16-16-30 to 9-12-9-24 I think I saw about 900 points increase. I basically saw 4K points from 200MHz and 900 point from timings and knew it was all about those DDR3 clock speeds. Keep in mind, I didn't do any timing testing with my 1366 platform because the clocks max out at 2200 so I automatically just set super tight CL8 timings. I spent a solid 2 hours trying everything to get decent ram speeds out of the 1366, just not possible.

I couldn't tell you anything about how timings effect cores, sorry. The timing tests were done with G3258, Z97OCF, and Sammy TridentX 2400 CL9. With the ram clocked to 2600 going from 11-16-16-30 to 9-12-9-24 I think I saw about 900 points increase. Just goes to show how IMCs have changed! Imagine the last generations of DDR4 boards/processors! We're quite a bit far from DDR5 if we consider the time DDR3 lasted.

I'll put some 2400/c10 in my system tonight and set 2200 with timings from 8 to 15 to see how it changes.

The older X58 stuff could do about 2400-2600 on memory if using a Gulftown/Westmere based processor. They didn't like doing it with 4GB sticks, though.

You needed 3*2GB kits right?
Yup. Elpida Hypers were usually the fastest at speeds like 2000 6-6-6 or 2200 7-8-7 and so forth. They're capable of doing 2400 7-8-7 on later chipsets but that's a pretty big stretch on X58.

Woo!

Also, IMC speeds help a lot on X58. Don't be afraid of 1.50V QPI+ when benching (especially cold). You should be able to hit your core speed minus 200-300MHz, limiting around 4500-4600 on air/water. With Westmere, like you have, IMC speeds needs to be at least 1.5x times the memory speed.

For example, if you're running 2400 on the memory, IMC needs to be at least 3600MHz. On Bloomfield, this was 2x which is why running memory over 2000MHz or so got more difficult (IMC at 4GHz+ needs reasonably "high" volts--1.35V QPI or more).

What types of 2GB sticks do you have? PSC, Hyper, BBSE, etc?

That definitely gives me more things to try. I was running the QPI at 2X and the QPI voltage at 1.2v. I have a few OCZ platinum 2x2 kits and an OCZ Gold 2x3 kit, don't know the IC's. I also have some old Corsair Micron 1.9v stick I can try (awesome for X48), @sunset1 is a hero for finding me that one a while back.

Microns won't do a whole lot for X58... likely around 2000 8-8-8 or 8-9-9 with enough volts (1.80-1.90V). My old LV OCZ Platinums were Microns.

Good luck... hopefully you get some Hyper or PSC in there!
