I figured that since Aquamark3 is such an old benchmark that it would not utilize multiple CPU cores and I could get away with using a modern dual core. I spent days tweaking settings and trying many different operating systems and graphics drivers. After hours of frustration with scores that seems out of pace with others and once I eliminated all the variables I came to the realization that the benchmark program must need more cores. Since I have no modern quad core chips, I went to my Xeon X5667 1366 quad. With the CPU and RAM speeds clocked the same as my G3258 I saw a nearly 30,000 point increase going from dual to quad. We see people getting scores in the 400K range so you might be thinking that 30K is not a whole lot, well, look at the current total point separation and you see that it is absolutely huge.

I found that out the hard way as well. My g3258 clocks better than my 4770k. Its a really good 4770k, but due to terrible cb, I can't run it at the speed that it should be capable of. But at 6.3-6.4ghz through 01, 03, and am3, the scores were terrible with the g3258.

After countless hours of air testing 8800’s in Aquamark3 I have learned a few things that I want to share. I am sure that most of you already know this information, but some of you may not and this might help. I have since learned that Aquamark3 is closer to a CPU benchmark program than it is a GPU one. It relies heavily on CPU and RAM speeds.

I came into this with the intention to use my G3258 for all my benches. We see people getting scores in the 400K range so you might be thinking that 30K is not a whole lot, well, look at the current total point separation and you see that it is absolutely huge.

As I mentioned before, Aquamark3 scores are drastically improved with increased RAM speeds. When I compared the Aquamark3 scores going from 2400 MHz to 2600 MHz I saw a 4,000 point improvement in the total score. The point ratio breaks down and the improvement decreases the higher up you go in ram speed, but there is still huge improvements to be made my maxing out the ram speeds. I didn’t do a lot of testing with timings, but I did see marginal point increases with tighter timings. In my experience at least, it is better to have higher frequencies than tight timings. Unfortunately my 1366 platform won’t let me achieve even decent DDR3 speeds which I suspect has more to do with the IMC of the Xeon chips rather than the limitations of my R3F.

As for OS tweaks, there are quite a few and I won’t go into them at this time. I will say however, that as a result of 2 day’s worth of OS testing I found stripped XP 32 to be the fastest, but only by a few hundred points. I tested W764, W732, XP32, XP64, and three verities of streamlined / stripped XP32 installs.

Please note that this has been my experience Aquamark3 and you may come to different conclusions with your tests so please don’t take what I have said as a the rule. thumb.gif

well as dj taught me once it's not so much about the cores because aquamark scores the same for me with 2 cores enabled with my 6700k compared to 4 and ht. it has to do with all the instructions the core i series has compared to the pentium. it has nothing to do with amount of cores.

Look at cpuz screens of g3258 compared to 6700k and you will see the difference.

If you look at my aquamark water cooled sub here, only 2 cores enabled and I saw not even a point difference with 4 cores and hyper threading

That actually makes a lot of sense. +1 Aquamark is supposed to be a single threaded benchmark but I was having some serious issues getting a good score with the G3258. Then I saw how it compared with the quad and assumed it wanted more cores. Very informational, thanks!

AFAIK buying caps from eBay is the easiest way to get ripped off on eBay. Too many stories of nice cap labels being put on garbage rated caps.

Sure, there are a lot of Imation caps on ebay. As I have purchased this listing 4 times now I can attest to them being genuine Sanyo WG caps. Genuine Sanyo WG caps have a "K" style vent while the knock off WG (and others) caps will have the "T" style vent. Furthermore, as with genuine Sanyo battery's, they will have a nearly invisible watermark of sorts on the shrink wrap, which these do. So go right ahead and buy these caps while you still can, they are amazing and a fraction of the original price.

Keep in mind you'll want different voltage caps for different filtering. The stuff around the core will want 2.5V caps and for the input caps you'll want 16V.

From my EE design perspective its better to over rate the capacitors and run them at 2/3 of the rated voltage. This is true especially with electrolytics because the thin oxide layer on the alumimum degrades much faster the closer you are to the rated voltage. In the case of the 8800's I chose a standard of 6.3v for core/memory stuff because the memory voltage of the Sammy chips seem quite happy at 2.3v which is getting a bit stressful for 2.5v caps. For power stuff I chose 16v caps because you will be operating at the literal max value if you use 12v caps.
