Geforce 8800 DESTRUCTION Competition - DISCUSSION THREAD - Page 47

started modding my samsung 8800gts 512mb, I know the bottom right cap looks terrible, but no point in messing with it now. Those are 2.5v caps from a dead epower, still need to add 6.3v caps for the memory.

All my resistances are good so gonna fire it up now. I always get so nervous before I start it up, I have had a lot go up in smoke on boot, but getting better with more practice.

I was so mad because the spot on the back that I dremeled for ground I can't really use because a wire there hits my memory sticks, the memory vr just barely cleared. But I have 8 ground connections which should be way more than enough for a 3 phase. Also the empty pad to the left of the top phase is another un used power input, so there is actually 4.

Cutting pin 15 on gpu controller sucks but the traces are much bigger than cards today and not so close together so it's good practice. Not getting any resistance from the pin so it should be cut.

Der8auer's guide helped me a lot.

Phases removed.

Copper cladding added.

Pin 15 cut

Used a blob of solder to connect un-used phase to copper clads.

PCB dremeled for more ground.

Added more wires for power just for overkill

Ground Connections

Memory mod done and 2.5v caps added, and measure points added for gpu and memory.

Related to the destruction of 8800GTs, a feat which I believe to be impossible, I once forgot to plug in the fan on a single slot card after cleaning. I then stuck it back in my folding right with three 9800GX2s and cranked it up. After an hour I started to smell this weird burning smell, and decided to check my temps. Lo and behold, the 8800GT was running at 165c, and likely had been the entire time.

That card still works to this day.

At this point, you have to watch out for someone selling one. EVGA produced a few batches of them but have not had any available since January of 2014, IIRC. As soon as it went retail (in 2013?) I picked one up. I really wish I had snagged a few more doh.gif

Guys I have a couple 8800GTS that I'm not going to have the time to test if anyone's interested. I've had them for several years and I'd rather see someone else do something with them.

Both cards are G80 640MB cards but 1 is the special EVGA SSC with 112SP. This was the card to have back then if you couldn't front the $$$ for the GTX but the 512MB from the G92 was holding you back. If anyone's interested just shoot me a message or post up.
