[EuroGamer] Square-Enix cans convoluted Deus Ex: Mankind Evolved pre-order program - Page 3

It's great to see more marketing nonsense crushed by consumers. Let's get it straight that this represents SQueenix's marketing decisions(as the publisher) and not the developer Eidos Montreal.

Oh, c'mon. Whenever a company does this during its Kickstarter it's fine, but when a company takes a risk and sees if this can also be handled with preorders people lose their ****. There is no nonsense campaign, this was simply testing out the waters since the trend seems to show that people love to pay more money to get the game earlier. Just as much as people pay more for a Kickstarter to buy themselves into beta or even alpha.

It was a ballsy move, I like that. Just because it backfired doesn't mean it was nonsense, it just shows that people who are on Kickstarter are a far different crowd from those that purchase retail games. But there's nothing wrong to throw things at a wall and see what sticks.

Pre-order is for fans, but if you want them to invest you need to give them a worthy package. Not just a few in-game cosmetics.
It should be like the collector's edition. Steelbooks, statues, cloth map, etc.
Unless it's something that is worth buying, don't expect me to purchase it.
Even though I love the franchise and definitely going to get, I see no reason to pre-order.

Same thing with Blizzard, all you get is another pet in a game that you may or may not play, and a new avatar.

So wait, I'm not going to get a whole bunch of in game crap I'll use once and then throw away when better items come along? PFFT! Now there's no reason to buy it. Everybody knows the only reason to get hyped about a game is the preorder DLC with the McDonalds, Burger King, Carl Jr's, Hardees, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Doritos 24 hour double quadruple XP Nuketown zombie mode with an extra skin for your weapons that makes it look like blue tiger camo because that's what nobody ever uses in real life. Wait, what were we talking about again? Oh yeah, and the 4 day early release because we lack willpower and will make a $60 commitment to a game that's not out yet just so we can play it 4 days early because 4 days is like FOREVAR!!!!! I can't wait that long! And the extra in game mission is probably totally worth it. Like I bet it has a bunch to do with the actual plot of the story and isn't some tacked on side mission where you're solving a small time murder in Detroit and then you get 50 credits afterwards and like 10 XP because that's also worth committing to buying an unreleased game.

ALL OF THIS is a legitimate reason to spend 2 hours worth of a nurse's or teacher's salary on something that's not even out.

sigh. I hate gaming now. Wait. No I don't. I hate gamers for being suckered into all of this nonsense.

It is is nonsense that you would have to rely on other people to get the highest rewards. The model many kickstarters employ of a tiered program at least guarantees you the rewards once the funding goal is reached to create the game.

How about the Kickstarter goals? Same principle.

Kickstarter's tiered goals, in theory, are designed to allow additional funding to pay for the creation additional features.

AAA publisher-backed game development doesn't work that way. The game's goals and deadlines are already outlined. The development team is already fixed and paid for. If there is any change to the feature set, it will be a reduction as delays occur and deadlines need to be met, not the other way around. No amount of people preordering is going to change that, and it just becomes a scam to get more money out of people or punish them by locking content away on release and charging for it later in the form of DLC.

Now, that said, Kickstarter is often abused, and the tiered goals end up being very similar to what you see Square Enix trying to do here.

The only reason they backtracked is because the pre-order numbers are probably way down compared to what they expected, not because of some backlash from fans. Money talks, period.
