Windows 10 technical preview "expired" - restarts every couple of hours.

Heya,

I just got a message saying that my windows 10 technical preview has expired and my computer will begin restarting every few hours. This is mind boggling to me. There was absolutely no warning.

I have a windows 7 and 8 CD key, but from what I can tell, I can't activate the free upgrade unless those items are already installed. So I would have to reinstall windows (which I don't want to do), install windows 8, then install windows 10. This seems crazy!

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Technical previews have a set expiration after the release of the new OS that is stated by Microsoft after new builds are released. The most recent builds (9926, 10041, 10049) started giving warnings on 9/17/2015 that the license key would expire on 10/1/2015 per the Windows Insider page for downloading the ISO.

To do the update to Windows 10, you must update from either Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 that is installed onto the machine you want to update. You can't do a clean install of Windows 10 and activate the install unless you have a product key for Windows 10.
