Can Anyone Give Me a Hand with SLI?

Hi Guys,

So i have a question about SLI. The support guy who i have been dealing with from MSI seems to think that what i want to do is possible, except he speaks about as good english as the woman in 2 girls 1 cup. However people on the MSI forums seem to say no its not possible.

Basically i haver an MSI GTX 770 Lightning 2GB card, and recently aquired from a friend their old GTX 770 Gaming edition 4GB card. Ive seen loads of posts all over forums online that as long as the cards have the same chip, the VRAM doesn't matter and the larger card will just clock down to 2GB with the smaller one. So i thought i would give it a go, got nothing to loose. However when I've tried this, my system detects both cards and they show in device manager, as well as in nVidia Control panel. I can assign a dedictaed PhysX card, but i dont get any other SLI options. The section where the menu title is supposed to say "Configure SLI, Surround and PhysX" just says "Configure Surround and PhysX". Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, swapping SLI bridges. I've even done a complete reformat because... well why not.

Can anyone tell me for definite that this will or will not work. Has anyone done it before?

Cheers Guys.

AFAIK you are going to need to modify the vBIOS on one if not both cards to allow them to play nice together. Once you do that, they should work exactly like you expect them to (clock down to the rate of the slowest card, and deactivate any extra RAM that the lower card does not possess).

Ah ok, i guess i'll have to find some sort of bios flash for them then. I have flashed the BIOS once on the lightning card to allow the FAN to go above 90% speed but thats as far as my GPU BIOS flashing experience goes. Anybody able to suggest my next steps?

Use nvflash to save the bios from your 2gb card (nvflash --save --index=0/1, nvflash help will show you all the commands to use). Flash that one to the 4gb card (save the 4gb card's bios also before doing this!). See how it goes then.

OK I might give this a try, thanks i will let you guys know how it goes. I might watch a few youtube videos about nvflash first.

I've been through this as well.

Just because the cards have the same chip doesn't mean they will SLI.

But Nvidia will not tell you that up front and when confronted, they blame the different bios.

I had a Zotac 980 and an evga 980 that would not play nice with each other. SLI would be greyed out and not selectible.
