[Wccf] DX12 features used in fable legends

Are they seriously using lot of Async compute ?!
Why the 980ti got the lead in the majority of the benchs, is the gm200 better at handling AC than the gm 204 ? And why the hawaii gpus are better than the fijy ones in handling DX12 ?

That's what they told us (I'm the author and I gathered their replies via PR).

TBH, he could be saying that about the XBO version. No?

According to the devs the average asynchronous workload was ~5% per frame, so not much at all. Maybe they use more on the Xbox One build. UE4 documentation still says Async Compute is implemented for Xbox One, but given that Lionhead added that, they've probably since added it to PC as well.

In your statement, you mentioned using Async Compute. Can you tell us how you’re using it in Fable Legends?
Multi-engine is the official D3D12 term for that feature. We’re using it quite heavily across the scene, including dynamic GI compute shaders, GPU-based culling for instanced foliage, Forward Plus compute shaders (light gathering). In addition, all the foliage physics in the scene (bushes, grass, etc.) is simulated on the GPU that also runs concurrently with the graphics.

You’ve also mentioned using manual Resource Barrier tracking and explicit memory management. In your experience developing Fable Legends, which one proved to be more important in terms of raw performance gains?
The resource barrier tracking gave us some really significant wins in terms of performance. Fable Legends is a compute-shader heavy game, and D3D12’s Resource Barrier tracking features allow us to kick off large numbers of compute shader dispatches without creating stalls on the GPU between each one.

As a reminder, Fable Legends is powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 and is currently in Closed Beta for PC and Xbox One; the Open Beta phase should start soon. It will be interesting to see what kind of DX12 features will be implemented by future UE4 titles; stay tuned for more coverage on DirectX 12 and its application in upcoming games.

There's no reason to say that in relation to the Xbox One version of the game when we've inquired about the DX12 benchmark.

I don't have any idea where the 5% came from, but Lionhead's Engineering Lead cited heavy usage of Async Compute throughout the combat scene he was demoing during the Fiji launch. That 5% never sounded true to me, especially if physics, AI and indirect lighting are all async compute functions as was stated.

if that is true then someone is lying

nvidia clearly said on their recent paper DONT use much async compute otherwise it will bottleneck the system
the dev said he used heavy async on fable
now either nvidia somehow gave the reviewers a specially crafted 980ti that can do heavy async
or the dev doesnt know how to be dev
or you are shifting what the dev said
